- ItemThe effect of thematic curriculum on academic performance of pupils in Oyam district: the case of Minakulu sub-county;(Kampala International University, College/School of Education and distance learning., 2011-05) Otim, PaskolinaThis study was about the effect of automatic curriculum on academic performance in Oyam District. The study focused on the use of local language, continuous assessment, instructional materials and themes and how they affect academics performance of pupils in Oyam district. Information on the existing materials were searched from both primary and secondary sources. The researcher used both probability and non probability methods of sampling. The uses of questionnaires, interviews, observation were applied to father information from the respondents. Data were thus analyzed through the use of tables, pie-charts and graphs. The findings revealed that the use of local language has effect on pupils’ progress, lack of instructional materials were noted and this affects performance. The researcher thus recommends that Head teachers should constantly supervise the teachers, proved enough learning materials and balance teaching in both local and official language for the good of the pupils and teachers were encouraged to be creative and innovative.
- ItemEffects of child abuse on academic performance of pupils at primary school level in got Oyaro zone Rachuonyo north district Nyanza province Kenya(Kampala International University, College of Education Open and Distance Learning, 2010-08) Owade, George NgogeThe purpose of this study was to determine the relationship between child abuse and academic performance of pupils in 23 primary schools in Got Oyaro Zone Rachuonyo North District in Nyanza Province Kenya. The specific objectives of the study were:- To establish the factors responsible for child abuse in schools in Got Oyaro Zone of Radinonyo North district Kenya. I identify the effects of child abuse in Got Oyaro Zone and suggest measure that should be underscored to handle and earnest the problem of child abuse and violation of the child rights. The method used for data collection were questionnaire to the pupils, teachers, education staff and some community members of Got Oyaro Zone. The findings revealed that child abuse has negative impact and affect pupil's academic performance in the zone during curriculum and co-curricular dispensation. The study therefore recommends that the government should take serious steps towards eradiation of the vice. The government should come up with effective ways of identifying the culprits and serious interventions be put in place to curb the ill in order to save the innocent child. Teachers should not ignore children who are withdrawn and who may be showing signs of trauma. The teacher should try to find out the root cause of such signs and strive to device possible means of solving the same. School counselors are therefore challenged to be available in school and offer counseling service ideally to assist these very vulnerable children whenever possible. They thus can transfer complicated cases to relevant authorities for appropriate actions. Members of the provincial administration, paralegal, Rachuonyo chapter, political and church leaders are called upon to come up work as a team for the posterity and education of this zone.
- ItemThe effects of teaching methods on the academic performance of commerce in selected secondary schools in Kobujoi division, Nandi south district(Kampala International University, College of Education Open and Distance Learning, 2009-08) Bittok, Paul KipkoechThe study was carried out to establish the effects of teaching methods on academic performance in commerce among selected secondary schools in Kobujoi division. The main aim of the researcher was to find whether teaching methods affect the academic performance of commerce among those secondary schools. The study was guided by the following objectives: 1. To establish the teaching methods used in the teaching of commerce in the selected secondary schools, 2. Assess how teaching methods affect the academic performance in selected secondary schools, and 3. Find out how the teaching methods affect the academic performance of students of selected secondary schools at national examination level. The study design was cross sectional in nature as the study investigated a cross section of the population in a short period of time. The study design was adopted to answer the objectives. The researcher used qualitative research methods for in-depth understanding of the phenomena. Five schools were sampled. The participants of the study included 5 head teachers, 15 teachers and 20 students all totaling to 40 respondents. The sampling of respondents was both random and purposive in that the students were randomly selected from different classes of respective schools while head teachers were purposively selected. The research instruments used for data collection included: observation, interviews, questionnaires and documents. It was established that teaching of commerce subject was a sustainable activity if good and relevant teaching methods in commerce are applied. It was concluded that if commerce is to be taught and learned effectively, there should be adequate instructional materials such as textbooks, manuals, pamphlets, adequate infrastructures for example classrooms, enough viii furniture and libraries, effective teaching methods such as active methods and good levels of students' motivation. Recommendations of the study are that there should be combined efforts in order to uplift the effective teaching and learning of commerce not only in Kobujoi division, but also in other parts of the country as a whole and that effective teaching and learning of commerce should be supplemented by other stakeholders such as non- government organizations in the district leading to increased positive effective learning by the students. The recommendations further indicated that secondary school and teachers themselves would soon change from the ineffective teaching and learning of commerce after realizing their mistakes. It was suggested that the government should support secondary schools in terms of provision of enough instructional materials, infrastructures and training of more teachers.

It is also an investigation of how effective this problem can be solved . The researcher gives various methods in collecting data including questionnaire, interview, and observation ,he particularly commonly used a questionnaire because it is more advantageous over the others. In selecting the sample, the researcher decided to use six schools and parents to represent the population. For the success of free primary education, there should be a combined effort and management of all the stakeholders including the government and the non-governmental organizations.

Those who remain in school get married late and others remain permanently unmarried though well read. On this note therefore, it can be concluded that the problem of high girl school dropout develop around poverty and the parents attitude towards the girl child education.
- ItemImpact of gender issues on the academic performance of learners. a case study: Yeembondo primary school ma Vindini zone katiionzweni district(Kampala International University, College of Education Open and Distance Learning, 2009-08) Mathew, Mutua TutaThe essence of this study was to determine the impact of the gender issues on the academic performance of learners in selected schools of Mavindini zone Kathonzweni district, Kenya. Specific objectives of the study were to: examine the impact of gender on academic performance of learners in Kathonzweni district and to examine strategies used by schools to improve on the academic performance of the girls and boys of Mavindini zone Kathonzweni district. The methods used for data collection were face to face interview, which were carried on with parents, Questionnaires were distributed to students and teachers. Observation was done on the state of the learners. The findings revealed by 70% of the respondents that gender issues affect the performance of the learner's negatively. 58% of the respondents also revealed that majority of the learners in the schools are boys. According to 70% of the respondents most of the schools had gender biasness in all the resources used by the learners. 80% of the respondents revealed that poverty has greatly affected the performance of the learners. To ensure quality, the study recommended that, the government should step in to see that all children are taken to school both girls and boys. The parents and the community should be sensitized on the importance of educating all their children both boys and girls. The government non-government organizations, publishers and curriculum developers should work hand in hand to produce gender sensitive books, which will change the attitude and stereotype thinking.
- ItemImpact of learning resources on the academic performance of primary school pupil's: a case study of tindiret zone Nandi south district, Kenya(Kampala International University, College of Education Open and Distance Learning, 2009-11) Korir, John.K.Early childhood education forms the foundation for the child's future formal, informal and even non- formal learning. It is here that basic knowledge is given to the child and foundation for the economically productive and life satisfying is given. This was achieved with reason to provide adequate and effective learning resources to both the pre-school teachers and pre- school children with a view to improve in their everyday participation and performance in their learning activities. The quality and quantity of instructional resources available in the preschools determine the quality of education that children acquire. The study will strive to give a survey on the impact of learning resources on the performance of pre- school children Tindiret Zone. The study was guided by research questions that were set to establish the impact of instructional resources on the performance of pre- school children in their instructional process. The target population was education officials in the zone, all the pre- schools in Tindiret Zone, Nandi south district while the sample will comprise of fourteen randomly selected preschools, 14 teachers, 20 children and 10 parents. The study selected ex-post design facto design. There were questionnaires for education officials and teachers, an interview schedule for the parents and a checklist for the children, which were used to collect data. The study found out that schools in the zone have learning resources while others have no leaning resources. The study also found out that different children perform differently in their instructional activities because of varied provision of learning resources both at home and while at school. The study discovered that all respondents would co-operate in order to make the study a success.

The researcher studied the effects of motivation on academic performance in chemistry. This report is made up of five chapters. Chapter one deals with the introductory part of the research. It talks about the background, the theory, objectives and significance of the study. Chapter two is the literature review. It gives an insight into the different vies of authors trying to highlight on factors and forms of motivation and their impact on academic performance. Chapter three deals with the research methodology. It includes the design, environment, respondents, instruments, data collection procedures and statistical treatment of data. It specifies how the data was collected and analyzed to come up with the conclusion. Chapter four is presentation of data from the field. It deals with analysis and interpretation of data. Chapter five is the last chapter in this project. It deals with discussion, recommendation and conclusions.

Poverty has been a hindrance to successful education among the rural poor. The existence of relevant support mechanisms throughout the history of teaching has been a key factor in enhancing the aspect of academic fulfillment among the most vulnerable in the society. The research work attempted at achieving the major goal of understanding the relevant concepts that link poverty and academic performance in schools. The notion of poverty and its long term effects on how a pupil perform formed the major starting point in this research. The analysis further states that certain inferences support pupil educational achievements as analyzed in chapter four. Tables and other tabulations were analyzed carefully and then conclusions were drawn as appropriate. In conclusion, the research has established key features that if adopted then it is possible that school going pupils can be able to achieve their desired academic goals. This has been summarily discussed in the last chapter of this project.

The specific objectives of the study were to find out the relationship between administration structure and student performance, to find out the relationship between rules and regulations and student performance and to find out the relationship between Examinations and student performance.The methods used for data collection was questionnaires to the staff members of the schools involved in the study. In chapter four, the findings were presented and interpreted in relation to the study objectives and research questions. While linking to the existing literature, results included ~demographic characteristics, frequency and percentages. Based on the findings it was observed that there is significant relationship between school management and academic performance of students. In chapter five, development of solutions to the problem, summary of the findings and conclusions were attempted. The findings suggested recommendations on areas pertaining to the provision of facilities at school in order to ensure a better management of schools.
- ItemSchool feeding programmes and academic performance of special needs pupils in siongiroi zone, siongiroi division, Bomet district-Kenya(Kampala International University, College of Education Open and Distance Learning, 2009-12) Mogoa, Richard NyakambiFor a number of years primary schools in Siongiroi zone have not been performing very well. The researcher wanted to investigate if school feeding programmes will improve pupil's academic performance. In the study, the researcher employed descriptive design. Therefore simple survey or poll for the purpose of describing attitudes, beliefs and behaviors of the study population were used. Questionnaires were used in the collection of data. The raw data was then analyzed, presented in percentages and frequency distribution tables. The findings from the study revealed that there are few feeding programmed in the schools. 11. also showed that school feeding programmes significantly affected pupil's academic performance. From the findings, it implies that there is a great need for the SMCS to be sensitized and the government to add more weight in the school feeding programmes by funding and seeking donors. Suggestions for further research were to investigate the impact of absenteeism on pupils' academic performance.
- ItemTeacher motivation and academic performance in ober zone kasipul division, south Rachuonyo district Kenya(Kampala International University, College of Education Open and Distance Learning, 2009-08) Odhiambo, Kennedy ArogoA study on teacher motivation as determinant of teacher performance in Omiro Primary School, Ober Zone was carried out with the main objective of establishing the relationship between teacher motivation and teacher performance. The specific objectives of the study were; to establish the relationship between teacher motivation and performance, to determine factors that influence teacher motivation, to establish ways of motivating teachers so as improve on their performance, to find out the factors that affect the teachers' performance. The population used consisted of 56 teachers who represented from the School. The methods used in the investigation were quantitative and qualitative. The purposive sampling procedure was employed so as to ensure that all the teachers in the school are represented. The sources of data were both primary, obtained using questionnaires which were distributed to the respondents and interview schedules. Secondary sources were also used, obtained from text books, internet, and newspapers among others. The questionnaire designated questionnaire for teachers was used to collect data for teacher motivation and performance and the questionnaire designated questionnaire for students was used to collect data on teacher performance. The interview guide was also used and observation schedules were involved in collecting data. Data was analyzed around each of the major three questions so as to achieve the objectives of the study. Findings revealed that the demotivating factors such as strife ridden atmosphere and unreasonable demands created by management, poor salary, discouraging team spirit, effecting heavy handed policies on teachers affects their performance. In conclusion, teacher motivation should be included as part of the working resources in an educational institution. The 10 salient points for motivation such as recognition, encouraging independence and creativity, availing training opportunities, ensuring safety of the work place, future security, respecting employees' ideas and being accessible were recommended.
