- ItemAccessibility of tourists to Uganda: a case study of Bwindi Impenetrable national park,(Kampala International University, College of Economics & management., 2018-05) Chebet Faisa NakitariThis study was set to examine effect of accessibility of tourist in Uganda a case study of Bwindi impenetrable national park. It was guided by the study objectives which included examining the means of accessing Bwindi impenetrable national park by tourist, evaluate the challenges facing tourist accessibility and determine the solutions to the challenges above and access the strategies used by tourist to develop tourism in Uganda. The study followed across-sectional and descriptive research design. The qualitative and quantitative approaches were employed based on a case study. A sample size of 50 respondents was determined through purposive and random sampling methods. The research used questionnaires and interview guide to collect data. The sector is embraced by both male and female with at least diploma level of education and majority of workforce have 3-4 years of experience so information obtained from them is reliable. Means of accessibility plays major role in tourism development, the sector is faced with a lot of challenges like inadequate fund, poor road conditions, heavy rainfall and different solutions were deployed; government recognize the sector and priotize it as top, build confidence in security and safety and promote product diversification that spreads up demands. Recommendations to develop tourism sector are; lobby for more funding, adverts our tourist features via different platform to create awareness around the world.

The overall aim of the study was to make an assessment of the challenges and Opportunities of Tourist Boards in the Development of Tourism: Case study of Kenya Tourist Board (KTB) The overall objective of this study was to determine the challenges and opportunities of Kenya Tourist Board (KTB) in development of tourism sector in the country. The study focused on the specific objectives which were, to assess the role played by KTB in developing tourism in Kenya, the evaluation extent to which KTB had in performing its roles, to determine the challenges and opportunities ofKTB in marketing and promotion of tourism, and finally examined how opportunities were used to overcome the challenges. The study sample frame included officials of K.T.B, tourists, tourism officers and managers of the various tourism organisations. The instruments used for collecting the data were primary and secondary methods which consisted of self-administered questionnaires, observation and interview schedule. Other documents or information thought to be necessary were also cited. A number of challenges and opportunities were identified during primary and secondary data collection and research findings at K. T.B. K. T.B involved strategic plans in developing Kenya Tourism Industry. Though according to the views of some of the respondents like tourists, Ministry of Tourism officials and managers of hotels and tour and travel companies said the performance ofKTB was not of the expected standards. This was due to low increase of tourist arrivals in Kenya as well as lack of repeat tourists who would bring sustainable development of tourism in Kenya. Hence the opportunities were given to overcome this problem. The conclusion was clearly cited and recommendations were drawn up for both the employees of the Tourism Department of the ministry of Tourism and the Kenya Tourist Board for better performances. For example the employees worked together in overcoming the challenges that KTB was facing. The findings were proved to gradual growth and development of Tourism Industry in Kenya. The suggestions and solutions were implemented by the above mentioned departments.
- ItemAssessment of the contribution of cultural tourism towards income generation: case study Central Uganda(Kampala International University, College of Economics and Management, 2016-05) Nasanyu, LoyceThe study was carried out to know the contribution of cultural tourism towards income generation central Uganda. The researcher used the following objectives of research on his search for relevant information. To assess the different cultural tourist attractions in central Uganda; to identify the categories of tourists or visitors who visit these cultural sites; to assess the income generating capacity of these cultural sites; and finally to assess the contribution of cultural tourism towards income generation in central Uganda. In order to establish the contribution of culture tourism in income generation, a descriptive cross sectional survey design was used. Both Primary data and secondary data were used to collect information. Primary Data was collected using questioners, observations and documentary reviews as the instruments. The data collected was edited for correctness and analyzed using the SPSS and the results interpreted. The results revealed that the cultural tourism categorized in form of religious, cultural, and others are in form of music dance and drama, All these categories, money is collected from the people who visit these places. The results also revealed that cultural tourism has increased the generation of income through foreign exchange especially from the foreign tourists. . It was revealed that government generates incomes from these cultural tourist sites, and this income has been instrumental in promoting infrastructural development such as roads, schools and hospitals. It was also found out that the income generating capacity of these cultural tourism sites were in between five hundred thousand and eighteen million per year. In addition to the income paid directly to the culture sites, the local people indirectly earn tl1eir living through the sale of crafts, fruits and vegetables and traditional clothing. From the findings, it was recommended that, capacity building for the employees be made to equip employees with administrative skills, especially financial management to reduce unnecessary expenses that limit the development of these cultural sites, sensitize the community about the value of having and developing these cultural tourism sites, there is need to increase budget allocation for cultural touring sites since most revenue is got from tourism attraction.
- ItemAssessment of the impacts of industries on rural environments: a case study Idma Cement Factory-Kasese District(Kampala International University; College of Economics and management, 2010-07) Byaruhanga, EmmanuelThe study aimed at finding out the impacts of industries on the rural environments in Hima Town Council- Kasese District, the objective of the study was; To find out the type of industry in Hima Town Council- Kasese District To discover the factors for industrial development in Kasese District To establish the impacts of industries on the rural environments The researcher used questionnaire format for the beneficiaries, interview guide for officials and observation method to find out the information. The findings of the study were presented by use of tables and edited information from questionnaires and interview guide according to the objective studied, the results revealed that industries have impacted the rural environments both positive and negative and this was evidenced by people acquiring jobs which has contributed to the improvements of the standards of living of the people, more so industries have also contributed to urban growth, and it has also improved on the educational standards, thus, reducing illiteracy in Hima Town Council and to Kasese as a whole. However much the factory has positively impacted on the environments, it has also impacted the rural environments negatively as evidenced by the following; pollution which is the biggest threat to the environments, displacement of the local people- settlement is a tag of war around the factory, and rural urban migration, this has lead negligence of other sectors. In conclusion, industries need combined efforts of central government, community participation so as to improve the delivery of services in Hima Town Council.
- ItemAssessment of Uganda government ‘s contribution to tourism training institutions in Uganda: a case study of the hotel and tourism training institute Jinja(Kampala International University, College of Economics and Management., 2010-09) Caroline, GwiinaTourism is one of the world’s leading industries, and it contributes greatly to Uganda’s economy. like all service industries, the quality of service offered is vital for favorable competition in the world market, and quality service delivery depends on the level of training and professionalism of the service providers. tourism is also a practical field with high costs of training which raises the overall cost of pursuing an education in tourism. in Uganda in particular, the cost of education is increasing every year, especially at higher levels of learning. this high cost of training makes government contribution to tourism training necessary for development of a skilled workforce in the industry. this study examines the government’s contribution to the hotel and tourism training institute of jinja, which is the only public institution established by MTTI to offer training in hotel and tourism studies. this study examines the government’s contribution to the institute, identifies various government policies aimed at facilitating it, examines the challenges facing the institute and also provides recommendations from different stakeholders in HTTI and the wider tourism industry on what can be done to overcome those challenges and improve upon the training of students pursuing tourism studies in the institute and the Uganda as a whole.
- ItemAttitude of local communities towards conservation. a case study of Amboseli national park.(Kampala international international: College of Economics and Management, 2010-06) Lydia, MetianThere is debate on what is the attitude of people living around protected areas. In this case, the attitude of the local community living around Amboseli National Park is assessed. The study also tries to establish how the national park can affect the immediate adjacent neighboring community both socially and economically. The relationship between the park management is also determined. Data was collected using both qualitative and quantitative methods. Five villages of lllasit, Nkama, Entonet Mortot and Namelok were considered. Results showed towards the local communities nearest to the park have suffered the social - economic impacts of the park. The local people's attitude towards the park greatly influenced the park management. Also the relationship between the park management and the local people has been in terms of employment, infrastructure development, security, income generation and education. Most of the local people depend on the park on their livelihoods since they sustainably collect weaving material from the park. As in many protected areas worldwide, Amboseli conservation problems largely result from conflicts of interest over land use. These include wild life hunting, cultivation and tradition resource uses among others. These problems have been overcome through; Revenue sharing, working together, income generating activities for local people, learning about the forest and problem animal control programs has been put in place. The study recommends that the park authorities should ensure that they develop a friendly environment and cooperate with the local communities to improve and manage the park resources.

In Budongo forest, it was introduced a few years back and one would expect it by now to be understood by the local communities and be appreciated if it is yielding benefits to them.The study was conducted between June and July in Budongo forest, Masindi district. The results showed that it was mainly indirect benefits that were being realized by the local communities. Although capacity building is one of the major goals towards the ecotourism project aimed at about 5Opercent of the local communities believed that if the current top management stopped what they are doing then the project will automatically come to an end.

The objectives of the study were to determine the respondents profile in terms of age, gender, level of education, I marital status and experience, to establish the level of effectiveness of climate change in selected conservation area, to determine significant relationship between climate change and tourism development in the selected conservation Areas-Uganda. To achieve the above objectives, the researcher collected primary data and secondary data. The researcher used descriptive analysis and used a sample size of 500 and was determined by formulae of solven, and 3 selected conservation areas in Western -Uganda, who were selected using purposive sampling and stratified random technique. The research findings showed that Climate change and tourism development at the selected conservation areas of Western -Uganda are generally good.
- ItemCommunication skills and quality assurance in the hospitality industry in Uganda Case Study: Munyonyo Speke Resort Hotel(Kampala International University, College of Economics and Management, 2016-05) Oludii, Isaac; OkwedaWhereas hotels have embarked on customer care as a means of curbing customer loyalty , huge market share , increased profits among others ,not much effort has been put on the traits and influencing factors that lead to yield of effective actions and practices of these activities that occur during customer care. Basing on the fact that this sector employs 90% labor intensive techniques of production constant communication is mandatory and owing to demand of quality output, capital techniques are used to ensure quality assurance .Hand in hand balance of the two techniques of production has enabled easy under rating of labor in terms of poor communication techniques such as stiff supervision, abusive languages. The underlying principal here is proper communication formats and behaviors to yield a modified quality base beginning from the producers to the products. The main purpose of this paper is to analyze the role of communication skills on quality assurance in hotels in Uganda. Using a quantitative survey research design, a target population of 150 respondents was set where the sample size of 100 respondents were interviewed using a semi-structured questionnaire. The raw data from the field was analyzed using descriptive and inferential statistics. The study found that while most respondents were highly willing to participate in the development process through decision making, resource mobilization among others, they also suffered severe deprivation through tight supervision, ignorance, suppression, s among other factors as discussed. Quality assurance projects are meant to contribute to mental and physical development, creating employment opportunities, improve the standard of living among others yet all these was seen progressing at a slow pace. Furthermore, respondents were aware of the role of communication skills in hotels. Yet, employee participation in quality assurance projects, seminars, workshops or educational tours was generally given little attention. Authoritarian influence and suppression were mentioned as the major factors influencing low participation levels. Finally, respondents seemed to agree that While quality assurance projects and programs were on course in addressing the hotels quality challenges, they were least satisfied with its achievements so far. Among others, the study recommended that quality assurance projects be harmonized to make easy communication in various projects.

Elgon National Park in Eastern Uganda.(Kampala International University, College of Economics and Management Sciences ., 2016-08) Mafabi, RonaldThe purpose of the study was to assess the contributions of tour operators and management of seasonality in Mt. Elgon National Park, Eastern Uganda. The study was guided by specific objectives that were meant to find out the level of activities carried out by tour operators, how these activities influence management of tourism and how tour operators can help in improving management in Mt. Elgon National park in eastern Uganda. Regarding the literature review, in chapter Two, variables were reviewed under themes that constituted sub-headings. They included level of activities carried out by tour operators, origin of tourism, challenges encountered by tour operators, challenges faced by the tourism sector and what tour operators can do to improve tourism. Of the activities performed by tour operators, Monitoring, addressing and delivering visitor satisfaction was the most activity as found out during the study. The research study used a cross sectional survey design consisting of both explanatory and descriptive designs. Explanatory design was used to explain the contribution of tour operators to the visitation while descriptive design was used to explore how big / the magnitude of the problem that was under study. The selection of respondents was by simple random and purposive sampling basing a sample size of 30 respondents from a target population of 50 respondents who included tour operators, Mt. Elgon staff, UTB tourists, staff managers all within the area under study. Data collection methods used to collect data included self administered questionnaires, interview method, and reviews of documents like reports and journals all which helped the researcher to access data needed for the research. In chapter four, findings from the contribution of tour operators showed Monitoring, addressing and delivering visitor satisfaction as a major contribution that result into a better management strategy of boosting tourism in Mt. Elgon. Other findings showed that government, stakeholders like private partners in tourism, UWA staff can play a vital role in keeping tourism a better source of attraction. Basing on the findings, it is therefore recommended that the government through the ministry of tourism, private partners, communities neighboring the park be considered in making decisions on how best to keep Mt. Elgon a better source of attraction for tourists.
- ItemCorporate social responsibility and performance of an organisation: case study of Sheraton Kampala Hotel, Uganda(Kampala International University; College of Economics and management, 2012-05) Egessa, RobertDue to recent scandals which have ruined corporations' image across the world such as the (Enron, Arthur Anderson, Pannalat, and Greenland hotel) for the case of Uganda, have put customers' trust of the frontline, leading to an exponential growth in the interest of CSR. Looking at Sheraton hotel Uganda, which carries inherently high risk due to the nature of the industry with losses during its transactions being carried out. This study seeks to identify whether CSR initiatives of Sheraton hotel have helped it in building its image. The research employed descriptive study, which involved cross sectional survey that used both quantitative and qualitative methods (tables, graphs) with the help of self-administered questionnaires. The major findings of the study were, 6% and 77% of the respondents revealed that CSR initiatives of Sheraton hotel were excellent and very good because of its trust fund for charitable activities such as sponsorship packages, good employee welfare, environmental conservation, and anti-pollution measures, 58% of the respondents revealed that CSR initiative has become a source of competitive advantage for the company and 42% revealed that it was due to cost focus and differentiation cost. The company also communicates effectively about its social and environmental activities simply because it encompasses effectively about its social and environmental activities simply because it encompasses a large range of communication, channels such as corporate advertising, media relation, public relations event management, internal communications, employee engagement and online communication. Overall, this research provides a clear justification and indication from the empirical evidences of various stakeholders such as managers, regulators, corporate customers, employees, investor that benefits of having CSR programs include, enhancing brand recognition and reputation, strengthening profits, risk management and boosting employee relations. However, Sheraton hotel Uganda has to put much effort by carrying out social audits and surveys among its stakeholders by monitoring their CSR activities.
