- ItemA secure Model for Student Results Verification Using Salted Hash Functions(Kampala International University, 2023-11) Joshua, TumusiimeThe security and integrity of examination results are paramount in educational institutions, where maintaining confidentiality and ensuring the accuracy of student grades are essential. This dissertation explores the use of salted hash functions as a means to enhance the security of examination results. The primary objective of this study is to investigate the effectiveness, practicality, and implications of incorporating salted hash functions into result management systems. The research encompasses a comprehensive literature review, the development of a prototype system, and an evaluation of its performance. The literature review examines existing systems and approaches in securing examination results, emphasizing the benefits and challenges associated with the use of salted hash functions. Drawing from this review, a prototype system is developed, integrating strong encryption algorithms and unique salts for each student record. During the evaluation phase, different types of hashed data were manipulated with a python script that was used to try and reverse hash the values stored in the database. The results show that the hashed values which did not include a salt were easily cracked hence revealing the original data while those values that were hashed with a salt did not reveal the original data. The conclusions stated that the developed model was effective at securing the results data stored in the database. Recommendations were provided for educational institutions seeking to implement similar systems. These recommendations include using hashing algorithms like Secure hash Algorithm (SHA) 256 to verify the integrity of the data stored in the database and the use of advanced encryption techniques to add another layer of security on the data. The dissertation also identifies areas for future research, such as exploring advanced encryption algorithms.
- ItemDesign of Ict Integration Framework in Primary Schools:(Kampala International University, 2022-10) John, ZirabaThe purpose of this study was to design an ICT integration framework in Primary Schools in Bundibugyo district. The following objectives guided the study: i) to investigate the factors affecting ICT integration situation in the Primary Schools in Bundibugyo; ii) to design a framework for ICT integration in the Primary Schools in Bundibugyo; and iii) to validate the framework for integrating ICT in the Primary Schools in Bundibugyo District. The study used a cross-sectional research design with a sample size of 189 respondents (60 pupils and 129 teachers). Stratified and simple random sampling were used as sampling techniques while questionnaires and interviews were used as research instruments. The study found that the factors that are affecting the use of integrated ICT in the primary schools in Bundibugyo include lack of teacher preparedness, lack of learners’ preparedness, and lack of administrative preparedness. The study recommended that teachers should be made prepared to integrate ICT at primary school level by receiving frequent ICT related trainings. Furthermore, the government in collaboration with district leaders and primary school head teachers should ensure that ICT resources are availed and distributed to schools according to their population. Additionally, the government or the school administrators and Parents Teachers Association (PTA) members should employ ICT technical experts in their schools to help provide technical support such as repair, installation, maintenance, or technical advice to teachers and learners. The learners should be mentally prepared and gradually introduced to integrate ICT in their learning process so that they can grasp the content progressively without getting discouraged or frustrated with the ICT-enhanced learning process.
- ItemEnhancement of enteprise network performance through virtual local area network implementation:(Kampala International University, 2021-09) Muhimpundu, PatrickThis study was to enhance an enterprise network performance through virtual local area network implementation by simulating an existing local area network and rectifying it using virtual local area network at Université lumière de Bujumbura, in two different scenarios (existing LAN and new LAN with VLAN implementation). The enterprise network performance at the university was unsatisfactory due to unsegmented network that cause inconsistent and unreliable network. Therefore, the study had the following objectives: To investigate the user satisfaction of the enterprise network performance, to identify the drawbacks of existing enterprise network performance, to measure the existing enterprise network performance, to rectify the drawbacks of existing enterprise network using virtual local area network, to simulate and compare the new (virtual local area network) and existing (no virtual local area network) enterprise network performance. The first objective was used questionnaire for and the end users at ULB were not satisfied with the network performance while structured interview was used in the second objective and there was unsegmented network at Université lumière de Bujumbura; And also, riverbed modeler academic edition 17.5 (OPNET) was used to get simulation results, measure and compare the network performance for both scenarios (with and without virtual local area network) in the third, fourth and fifth objectives. In third objective enterprise network components with no virtual local area network were implemented into optimized network engineering tool (OPNET) and the fourth objective was a duplicated scenario with virtual local area networkimplementation. The OPNET simulation results illustrated in third and fourth objective the minimum, average and maximum statistic data for both global and object statistics for both new (virtual local area network) and existing enterprise network without Virtual local area network technology. The simulated results for the fifth objective were comparison for both scenarios with and without virtual local area network and virtual local area networks had better performance than no virtual local area network. The global statistics results showed that virtual local area network had lower traffic and response time compared to no virtual local area network due to a segmentation of single large broadcast domain into separate broadcast domains in order to reduce and control traffic sent and received on the network and also virtual local area networks improved bandwidth utilization, power, speed and security. Virtual local area network effectively improved the network performance of the existing local area network simulated in OPNET simulator at Université lumière de Bujumbura. The study recommended that Université lumière de Bujumbura and other universities should implement virtual local area network to improve enterprise network performance, since Virtual local area network can significantly enhance the network performance as well enforce network security
- ItemAn assessment of ICT adoption by teachers in selected secondary schools in Gasabo District(Kampala International University,College of Computing and Information Technology, 2019-10) Mutuyimana, AimableTo develop a model for ICT adoption in selected secondary schools in Gasabo District. This study was guided by the following objectives: i) to assess the availability of ICT facilities in the selected secondary schools in Gasabo district; ii) to determine the performance expectancy of ICT adoption by teachers in selected secondary schools in Gasabo District; iii) to determine the effort expectancy of ICT adoption by teachers in selected secondary schools in Gasabo District, Rwanda; iv) to determine the social influence of ICT adoption by teachers in selected secondary schools in Gasabo district, Rwanda; and v) to determine the facilitating conditions of ICT adoption by teachers in selected secondary schools in Gasabo district, Rwanda. The target population of the study was 134 teachers and sample size was 100 respondents. The total number of returned questionnaires was 75. Data was analyzed using frequencies and percentages; mean and standard deviations. The study revealed that ICT availability was fairly satisfactory (average mean=2.97, Std=1.103). Furthermore, the study revealed that performance expectancy was satisfactory (average mean=3.92, Std=1.043). In addition, the study revealed that effort expectancy of ICT adoption was satisfactory (average mean=3.79, Std=0.952). Similarly, the study revealed that social influence of ICT adoption by teachers was satisfactory (average mean=3.89, Std=1.020). Lastly, the study revealed that facilitating conditions of ICT adoption by teachers was satisfactory (average mean=3.89, Std=1.020). The study concluded that ICT adoption by teachers can be possible when ICT facilities are available and when the teachers have performance expectancy, effort expectancy, social influence and facilitating conditions. The study made the following recommendations: The need for the government to provide schools with ICT facilities such as internet and laboratories; the need for the schools to encourage teacher training in the use of ICT, and the need for the school management to offer their support in the adoption of ICT in schools. The study contributed to new knowledge when it found that availability of ICT facilities, performance expectancy, effort expectancy, social influence and facilitating conditions are the prerequisite for adoption of ICT by teachers in a secondary school setting.
