- ItemMotivation and academic performance of intellectually challenge in learners in selected schools Nguu division Nzaiji district, Kenya(Kampala international international: College of Education, open and distance learning, 2008-09) Benson, Nyamai NguniaThe study is about effects of motivation on academic performance of intellectually challenged learners in the regular primary schools. The study was hampered by limited time. It was extremely difficult to attend to more than one appointment scheduled. The selected schools were at a great distance in the vast division and transport to and from the selected schools was another limiting factor. Costs for production of the questionnaires and the printing of the final draft were another limitation in the study. Reference materials for the study were unavailable as there were no libraries in the locality. However, the researcher was helped to carry out the study by other factors which included; familiarity with the teachers in the special needs education programmes in the divisions and knowledge of short cut routes to the various selected schools. The objectives of the study are to explore the teachers’ views on the causes of intellectual challenge to investigate the effects of intellectual challenge on learning of the intellectual challenged learners to identify different intervention measures for the intellectually challenged learners. The researcher used the quantitative approach of collecting data. The researcher designed a questionnaire as a tool for collecting the data. The researcher concluded that the teachers’ assistance to the mentally challenged learners is of great importance for them to realize their learning expectations. The mentally retarded learners are also adversely affected by negative societal attitudes towards them. The researcher recommends the government to sustain the school feeding programme to cater for learners needs especially those from poverty stricken areas. The mentally retarded learners should be given extra time to accomplish their analyzed tasks. Therefore the curriculum for the mentally retarded learners should be tailored / differentiated in order to meet their educational needs.
- ItemBarriers to inclusive education to children with disabilities in selected primary schools in Chemelil zone Nyando district Nyanza province Kenya(Kampala international international: College of Education, open and distance learning, 2008-06) Charles, AbongoThis study on the barriers to inclusive education on children with disabilities was carried out in selected primary schools in Chemelil zone Nyanza province of Kenya The study was organized in five chapters, in chapter one, it gave a background to the study. The study was on the premises that, inclusion of children with disabilities in the mainstream schools are faced by several barriers. The researcher therefore gave the experience concerning the problem that prompted him to undertake the study in chapter one. In chapter two, the researcher made references on various related literatures to find out what other writers have said about inclusive education. The related literature includes journals, bulletins and textbooks. Chapter three contains the research methodology. The area of sample was Chemelil zone, in Nyanza Province of Kenya. The sample population composed of teachers from regular schools and those from Special Schools, and education officers. Questionnaires were used as research tools and finally in chapter four, the researcher presented and analyzed the raw data collected in tabular form. According to the findings rigid curriculum, lack of qualified teachers, negative attitudes to the disabled children and they having diversified needs were identified as the barriers to inclusive education to children with disabilities. The study concluded that there are various barriers to inclusive education and recommends for strong policy actions to save the situation.
- ItemAnalysis of the factors responsible for pupils drop out in schools in Loita Division Narok South District - Kenya(Kampala International University.College of Education, 2010-04) Robert, Magut KibetThe major objective of the study was to examine the causes of school dropouts in Loita Division, Narok South district, Kenya. The study was conducted Division Narok South district Kenya. A total of 60 respondents were chosen; 10 politicians, 10 religious leaders, 10 political leaders, and 30 parents consulted during the study. The study findings were collected in line with the research questions of the study. The first research question sought to find out the causes of school dropout in Loita Division. The study findings reveal that; poverty, corporal punishments, chronic illness, long distance of schools and lengthy learning hours were the answers given by respondents. The second research question sought to find out the effects of school dropout in Loita division. The study findings here revealed that; high crime rates, high level of illiteracy, early marriages, and early pregnancies were the answers given by respondents on this research question. The third research question sought to find out the solutions to school dropouts in Loita division. The study findings revealed that; building of more schools, free education, compulsory education, provision of lunch in schools, and reduction of learning hours were the solutions given by he respondents. Conclusions and recommendations were then made after presenting and interpreting the data.

- ItemEffects of hearing impairment on academic performance of learners with specific learning difficulties in English; a case study of Nyamagana district, Mwanza region(Kampala International University, College of Education Open and Distance Learning, 2011-05) Kazzoba, Ahmed H.The research report is to found out the Effect of hearing impairment on the academic performance of learners with specific learning difficulties in English in Nyamagana District in Mwanza region. From the findings, it was realized that many learners with hearing impairment perform below average compared to those who do not have due to severity of hearing impairment in learners. A part from that the common causes of hearing impairment in these learners were diseases which affect the mother, use of drugs like quinine, trauma to the mother, maternal diseases like rubella etc. In order to improve academic performance of learners with specific learning difficulties in English there should be a modification of curriculum to suit the learners with hearing impairment. However, educating learners with hearing impairment needs a lot of devotion, patience and tolerances. As noted earlier, teachers are called upon to change their attitudes towards these learners who have hearing impairment. There is need for them to modify their teaching methods and approaches. This in turn will change the mode of presentation; hence effective teaching and learning will be realized.
