- ItemEducational Problems Encountered By the Physically Handicapped Children in the 8-4-4 Curriculum in Nkubu Division, Meru Central District-Kenya(Kampala International University, school of special needs education, 2007-04) Mercy K., MareteThe purpose of this study was to determine the educational problems encountered by the physically handicapped children in the 8-4-4 curriculum. The researcher used quantitative research approach with preference to survey method to determine the educational problems encountered by the physically handicapped children in the 8-4-4 system. The study was conducted in Nkubu Division, Meru Central District Kenya in three selected primary schools, which included Ntharene, Nkubu and Muguru. The schools are in the same area and cater for children with Special Needs in Education. The study involved 300 pupils- 100 pupils from Nkubu, 100 from Muguru and 100 from Ntharene Primary Schools. The information was gathered through use of questionnaires given to the respondents who in this care were pupils, parents and head teachers. This study the researcher employed two techniques namely: observation and questionnaires. Questionnaires were open-ended whereas some were close ended type. The researcher visited the three schools, gave them questionnaires to fill and later collected them in person.

Specifically, this study determined the profile of the pupils as to age, gender and class and it determined the level of teaching performance. Design: This study employed the descriptive survey method of investigation. Environment: This study was conducted in Kwihota Primary School of Thika District in Kenya.The school is located in Thika District, Ruiru Town about 4 kms off Thika-Nairobi Highway. Respondents: This study involved 154 pupils in upper primary which were included 50 from Primary Six (P6), 54 pupils from Primary Seven (P7) and 50 from Primary Eight (PS). Instrument: This study was a researcher devised instrument which was a questionnaire that contained questions about the profile of the respondents as to age, gender, class and level of teaching performance in four areas namely: teaching resources, teaching methods, teacher's qualities and classroom management.

MutugiThe study was about the teacher's attitudes towards inclusion of learners hearing impairments in regular classrooms in Dondora Zone, Nairobi -Kenya. The major respondents were regular primary teachers who were randomly selected from the four schools within the zone. The total number of respondents were twenty, five from every school. The study employed both qualitative and quantitative research design to determine the inclusion of learners with hearing impairments in regular schools. Questionnaire were then prepared using the specific objectives from the title of the study and given to the respondents to give their response. Data was then collected and analyzed inform of tables, pie charts and graphs. The objectives were to find out the regular teachers' knowledge and understanding of the hearing impairment learners. The teachers' knowledge and understanding on provision of education for hearing impaired learners. The teachers' views and attitudes towards the inclusion of leari1cr~with hearing impairment in regular schools. Major findings shows that the teachers had knowledge and understanding of the hearing impaired learners. This was because they were able to identify these learners with hearing impairments. They were also able to know the major cause of hearing impairment which is diseases. The hearing impaired should also be educated because they are normal children and have a right to be educated like the others non impaired. They should be handled by a specialist teacher. The hearing impaired should also be allowed to follow the regular school curriculum and allowed to learn with the non- impaired learner. Recommendations made from the study were training more teachers on special education so as to handle learners with hearing impairments in regular schools. Having a flexible curriculum to meet the needs of learners with hearing impairments. Equipping the regular schools with specialist material and equipment to cater for the learners needs. The hearing impaired learner should be allowed to follow the regular school curriculum and handled by a specialist teacher. From the study it can be concluded that the teachers have knowledge and understanding of the hearing impairment. The hearing impaired should be provided with education, included in regular schools handled by a specialist teacher. The curriculum should be modified to allow flexibility in the exam.
- ItemChallenges Facing the Implementation of Inclusive Education. A Case Study Of Selected Primary Schools in Kipsaraman Division Baringo District, Kenya(Kampala International University, School of Education, Open and Distance and E-learning, 2007-06) Juma, Hellen J.The main purpose of the study was to determine the relationship between school facilities and students performance. Specific objectives were to find out some of the effects of inadequate facilities at school on the academic achievement of learners. The methods used for data collection were questionnaires to the pupils. The findings from the study indicated that lack of physical facilities which was supported by 80% inadequate facilities, 50% miss use of the available facilities are among the factors that affect academic performance of pupils. The study recommended that the government through the constituency Development fund should build complete classrooms in time.

The objectives were clearly started to unveil the relationship of the teacher’s training and experience on the academic performance of learners. The study employed a collection of data using questionnaire technique which was subjected to a cross-section of teachers. Data was analyzed by use of tables and bar graphs. The researcher then discussed the findings as per the objectives presented. The significant relationship between the teachers’ training and experience on the academic performance of pupils was also established. Recommendations, conclusions and areas to note pertaining the findings were clearly highlighted.

Much attention was paid to the pupils of Jamhuri Primary school which is situated in the middle of the slum estates. The researcher applied questionnaire method to collect data which worked relatively well considering the response of the respondents. The study applied with qualitative and quantitative method of data collection where different tables were used. The hypothesis was that the general plight of the children was not adequately addressed. And this was due to the following; motivation, poverty, pupils own perception, negative way of socialization and deeply rooted peer influence. Meaning no proper direction. The study revealed that boy pupils are the worst affected. They go as far as working in farms I farm laborers or going stealing so as to meet the demand that drugs have imposed in them. This paper therefore will provide a guide to various researchers and academicians preceding this~ The government and other stakeholders will by no means find this useful. Otherwise the degree under which primary school pupils’ abuse drugs is pathetic. The essence of drug abuse will continue to remain a vibrant issue that captures international attention. The World over the abuse of drugs is manufactured as a result of confusion families from both internal and external forces
- ItemEffects of Hearing Impairment on Academic Performance of Children in an Inclusive Setting, Ran En Zone, Rongo District Kenya(Kampala International University, school of special needs education, 2007-08) Boniface, Otieno OtonyaThis paper explores the relationship between HJ and academic perforrmance of pupils in some of our public primary schools in Ranen Zone. Rongo District. Kenya. It employs both quantitative and qualitative analysis covering the entire zone which is about 68 square kilometers in area. The research findings revealed that there were many 11.1 children in our regular primary schools as there was 100% response from respondents on this fact figures were bigger in lower primary than upper primary, signifying their drop out in upper classes due to frustrations. Infections were the major newscast of 11.1 among learners represented by 67% and the majority of whom fell under moderate category. The attitude of regular learners, teachers and parents towards H.I. learners was found to be negative. In terms of academic performance they only managed to score between 20% and 39%. which is below average performance. Learning was based on non modified curriculum that only favored regular learners. I recommend that curriculum he modified to cater for them. expectant mothers should attend clinics for per-natal care to guard against 11.1 infections. All children should be immunized against infections of all kinds and the government should carry out census of H.1 persons. involve them in day to day learning and budget for their welfare. These would enhance assessment. correct placement. medication as well as referrals. The government should also train more special need teachers and post them to our regular public schools to assist H.I learners in an inclusive setting. This would improve the academic performance of H.T learners and enable them compete with the rest of the learners
- ItemTeaching approaches and academic performance of learners with specific learning difficulties in Homabay district.(Kampala International University, College of Education, Open distance and learning, 2007-08) Caroline, Naomi ShemThe study was carried out in Shauriyako primary school, Homa bay District Kenya. The study aimed at identifying the relationship between teaching approaches and academic performance of learners with SLDS. The objectives of the research were to determine the level of performance of learners with SLDS. To find out the approaches used by teachers to teach learners with SLDS. To establish the indicators of SLDS and to identify support services and remedial instruction that can be offered to learners with SLDS. The study employed a descriptive survey design. The population of the study was the teachers handling learners with SLDS. The researcher preferred the convenience sampling to get the sample population. The researcher used the questionnaire to collect data. The researcher analyzed the data using tables in which frequency and percentages were used. The main findings of the study were that learners with SLDS perform poorly in English and Mathematics because they don’t understand symbols, find difficult in interpreting multiplication tables, illegible hand wring and reverse of letter. The study also found out that most teachers use approaches which are not child centered to teach learners with SLDS which have also affected the pupil’s performance. The study concluded that performance in mathematics and English by learners with specific leaning difficulty was generally poor in Homabay District The researcher recommended that the curriculum developers (KIE-Kenya Institute of Education> should modify the curriculum of learners with SLDS so that it can meet the diverse needs of learners with SLDS.
- ItemTeachers’ attitudes towards learners with epilepsy in an inclusive setting in Dagoretti division, Nairobi(Kampala International University, College of Education, Open & Distance Learning, 2007-08) Milka, Mukuria N.The central problem of this study is that despite the fact that epilepsy is a disease like any other and that an epileptic has normal intelligence, teachers and the society know little or nothing about it and have negative perception towards this problem. Factors leading to negative perception and discrimination have not been fully investigated and understood. The purpose of this study was to find out the teachers knowledge of epilepsy in an inclusive setting. This was clone in selected primary regular schools in Dagoretti, Nairobi province. The sample of the study was 25 teachers from 5 schools male and female teachers were given equal opportunities. The study sampled schools using convenient sampling techniques. Data was collected using questionnaires Data collected was analyzed using descriptive statistics. From the findings most school don’t have any special needs teachers. Some special needs teachers have not changed their negative perception on these learner remedial classes to cover time lost during attacks and hospitalization. Majority of regular teachers have not trained in special education. Funds allocated to special needs in regular schools are diverted to other uses. Based on the findings it is recommended that every regular school should at least have one special needs teacher. Offer seminars and in-service courses to the special needs teachers. Train more teachers in special needs. Allocate more funds in special education needs. Create awareness through seminars, workshops, chief barazas, churches and the media. Teachers should be motivated to concentrate on assisting the special needs learners rather than focusing on the negative impact of their epilepsy or disability.
- ItemTeacher’s attitude towards learners with hearing impairment in an inclusive setting in Nyangoma Division, Bondo District.(Kampala International University, College of Education, Open & Distance Learning, 2007-08) Lydia, Atieno RawagoOn the findings of the study on teacher’s attitude towards learners with hearing impairment, the research has found out those learners with hearing impairment needs to be catered for in order to perform. Teachers should look into the affairs of learners, as they are concerned with the affairs of the normal hearing learners The researcher has also observed that learners with hearing impairment should be taught using the available teaching and learning resources. The researcher has also found out that there are no enough teachers who are equipped with knowledge and skills in handling learners with hearing impairment. Some of the conclusions gathered were that, these learners with hearing impairment are draw back to the mean score which is the core of drilling in our primary schools and hence teachers develop negative attitude or hatred towards the hearing impaired learners Also they make it difficult for the completion of the syllabus since they learn in a slow pace compared to the hearing learners. Most teachers who filled in questionnaire, expressed that these learners are supposed to be in special schools and not to learn a alongside the hearing learners.
- ItemTeacher’s attitude and academic performance of pupils with mild hearing impairment of Baba Dogo Primary School Nairobi District Kenya(Kampala International University, College of Education, Open & Distance Learning, 2007-08) Muhonja, MableThe purpose of this study was to find out the teacher’s attitude towards the children with mild hearing impairment. The study was carried out in Baba Dogo primary school, Kasaranj division, in Nairobi Kenya. All the information was obtained from the teachers whereby the researcher used the questionnaire to get the responses used to carry out the research. The questionnaires were issued to the respondents on the same day and collected after the exercise. They were analyzed manually but the percentages were calculated using simple electronic calculator. The data analysis was focused on the variations between the responses of all the respondents from the school. After calculating the percentages the frequency tables were drawn. The responses enabled the researcher to make outline of solutions and recommendations required. In the research, the researcher based her findings only on the data collected during the research Each research question was dealt with independently and findings discussed. The findings show that the majority of teachers in Baba Dogo primary school have come across these pupils and have them in classes. The respondents were able to give various causes of mild hearing impairment, their views according to their traditional beliefs about the causes of mild hearing impairment. The teachers also put across their views on inclusion of these pupils with mild hearing impairment they can learn with other pupils in class so long as they are assisted. From the findings it showed that there are several factors to be considered before including learners with mild hearing in class. The major findings were the children have to be assessed to find out the level of their disability and creating awareness to other children, teachers and parents. The findings made the researcher to come up with conclusions and recommendations on what to be put in place to make inclusion a success whereby all teachers should be trained how to handle the pupils with mild hearing impairment in classes.

Specifically, these data were gathered: profile of teachers as to age, gender, and marital status, number of years in service and educational qualification; and degree the problems encountered by the teachers teaching deaf blind children in terms of facilities and equipments, learning methodology, formal curriculum, mode of communication, and trained personnel. Design: This study employed the descriptive survey method of investigation. Environment: This study was carded out in Kabarnet School for the Deaf blind Children, Baringo District, Rift Valley Province of Kenya. Baringo district Is one of the 18 districts In the Rift Valley province covering about 8,655 KM2 In size. Respondents: This study Involved 24 teachers of Kabarnet School for the Deaf blind wherein 1 head teacher and 23 teachers. Instrument: This study utilized a researcher devised instrument which was a questionnaire that contained questions about profile of teachers as to age, gender, marital status, number of years In service and educational qualification and the degree of problems encountered by the teachers teaching deaf blind children in five areas namely: facilities and equipments, learning methodology, formal curriculum, mode of communication, and trained personnel. They were rated as follows: 4 strongly disagree (you disagree with no doubt at all), 3 disagree (you disagree with some doubt), 2 agree (you agree with some doubt), and 1 strongly agree (you agree with no doubt at all). Data Collection Procedures: The frequency and percentage was used to determine the profile of the teachers. The weighted mean was used to determine the degree of problems encountered by the teachers teaching deaf blind children in terms of facilities and equipments, learning methodology, formal curriculum, mode of communication, and trained personnel. The obtained data were expressed in the following mean range: 3~26 — 4~OO very severe, 2~51— 3~25 severe, L76 — 150 moderate, and L0O — L75 low. Findings: This study revealed the following: the mean age of the teachers was 4O~54; and the degree of problems encountered by the teachers teaching deaf blind children was severe (mean = 116). Conclusion: Based on the findings, it was concluded that the problems encountered by the teachers teaching deaf blind children were severe, However, it needs to be improved.
- ItemLearning influence on the academic performance of learners with hearing imapirmnet of Ochh integrated programme in Baringo Dictrict Kenya(Kampala International University; College of Education Open and Distance Learning, 2007-08) Chesang, Euniece J.This study investigated the problems affecting the performance of learners with hearing impairment of Ochii Integrated programme, Baringo District, Kenya. Problems were whether they are high, moderate, low or very low in the following aspects: suitability of the curriculum, Learning resources, attitudes and trained personnel and the profile of teachers in terms of their ages, sex, academic and professional training and experiences. This study employed the descriptive survey method to investigate the problems. Purposive sampling technique was used to identify the sample area. The subjects of the study were the teachers of Ochii Integrated Programme, 10 teachers were interviewed during the study. The teachers were useful in the study because of the role they play key role in teaching and implementation of the curriculum. This study utilized a researcher devised instrument in form of a structured questionnaire that was pre-tested before the actual fieldwork; it contained questions about profile of the respondents and problems facing learners with hearing impairment. The researcher sought for permission from the headteacher to conduct the research in the school. Upon being granted permission, the researcher prepared a schedule for filling and submitting the questionnaires with the respondents. Data collected was then analyzed; frequencies and percentages were employed to describe the profile of the respondents whereas weighted mean was used to determine the extent to which the above factors were favorable to learners with hearing impairment. The study found that classrooms in Ochii Integrated Programme were not properly managed to suit learners with hearing impairment. It was also realized that poor attitude by teachers and regular learners towards the hearing impaired learners was prevalent in the school thus impacting negatively on the academic performance of these learners. The findings of this study should be utilized by the policy makers in the Ministry of Education in order to implement policies and programmes that will dress problems affecting learners with hearing impairment in Integrated Programmes. Future research should focus on the performance of children with hearing impairment in integrated programmes.

Despite many programmes that the government has developed to combat the problems of the youth, little seem to be positive as so many school drop-out walk and not work into town. The current on going economic decline ofthe Kenyan society has serious impact of the youth. This implies that as future leaders decision makers, business people and parents, they are affected by both micro- and micro — economic policies, programmes and countries which hinges on sustainable development. The basic reason for categorizing pupils as school - drop- outs is to magnify the seriousness of social and economic problems which the people are facing in society.

Specifically, this study determined the profile of the pupils as to age, gender and class and it determined the level of enrolment for the last five years. Design: This study employed the descriptive survey method of investigation. Environment: This study was conducted in Bartabwa Primary School is situated in Ngorora Location, Northern part of Bartabwa Division, lower zone and the dry parts of Baringo district and North rift of Kenya. It is bordered to East Pokot district to the North and Central part of Baringo North constituency. Subjects: This study involved 80 pupils from Pl to PS with disabilities who have been enrolled for the last five years. Instrument: This study utilized a researcher devised instrument which was a record sheet that contained the following: age, gender, class and level of enrolment for the last five years. Data Collection Procedures: The frequencies and percentages were used to determine the profile of the pupils and level of enrolment for the last five years. Results: Pupils with disabilities are mostly male. The enrolment of pupils with disabilities has been quite unpredictable. However, the highest level of enrolment was in the year 2004.
- ItemProblems encountered by headteachers in inclusive education in Maranda division, Kenya.(Kampala International University, School of Education, Open and Distance and E-learning, 2007-08) Nyamwanda, Shadrack OseweThe research was aimed at measuring the problems that significantly threaten government efforts in developing and implementing inclusive education setting in Kenya with specific reference to Maranda division as a case study. the objectives which help the researcher to obtain data and the problems were: profile of the respondents and the degree of problems in inclusive schools in terms of attitude of the teachers and community, resource provision in schools, environmental adaptation in schools and community and the level of trained personnel. the study employed a descriptive survey method to determine the problems encountered by head teachers in inclusive education in Maranda division Kenya. the study employed Pearson’s correlational frequency and percentage distribution to determine the problems in terms of attitude, resources, environmental adaptations and trained personnel. the research findings were as follows: inadequate trained personnel — special needs teachers are very few in the division, inadequate resources (physical and material) facilities are totally lacking, poor school infrastructure — no environmental adaptation to increase access for special needs learners, inadequate finances to purchase equipment and materials required for special needs of various categories, negative attitude among teachers and community in general towards special needs students, lack of awareness, lack of information on the needs of disabled and the curriculum heavily emphasizes exam orientation. the foregoing pose critical problems to the development of inclusive education in maranda division, may be the whole district and perhaps the whole country. the situation can only be changed through prudent awareness campaign and coordinated planning.
- ItemDifficulties Encountered by Teachers of Learners with Low Vision in Regular Primary Schools in Kasarani Division Nairobi(Kampala International University, school of special needs education, 2007-09) Lilian, Mo OtienoThis study was carried out to establish the difficulties facing the teaching of learners with low vision in Kasarani division, Nairobi district. The quantitative approach and the survey strategy were used to collect the numerical data. A sample of 12/15 researchers responded to the questionnaires which were later analyzed using tables. The probably sampling technique was employed to get the sample for the study. The finding of the study revealed that there is great lack of materials and equipment in regular primary schools. The study also revealed that there is lack of qualified personnel to teach learners with low vision. There is also poor parental involvement and collaboration with other stakeholders in the education of learners with low vision. The recommendations made on the findings of the study were to train more personnel for teaching learners with low visior~ and equip the schools with materials and equipments necessary for he education of learners with low vision. The learners with low vision should be taken regular schools in the name of inclusive education and this should be intensively carried out by the government. Public awareness campaigns should be stepped up to sensitize the community about the educational efforts should be made to encourage and parental involvement as well as collaboration with other stakeholders in the education of the learners with low vision
- ItemThe attitude of teachers in regular primary schools towards the education for the physically handicapped: a case study of turbo division Vasin gishu district.(Kampala International University, School of Education, Open and Distance and E-learning, 2007-09) Nicholas, Kipkosgei MeliThe major purpose of the study was to investigate the attitudes of teachers towards the education of the physically handicapped children in turbo division. A quantitative research approach, using questionnaires was employed to collect the data for the study. Twenty primary school teachers and five schools were sampled for the study. Findings of the study show that the teachers, parents and children have several misconceptions and wrong beliefs about the nature and conditions of physical disabilities and about children with such problems. The implication of the study is that teachers should focus on raising their own awareness about physical disabilities through training in special needs education and other programmes.

Few strength were noted like high enrollment, reduction of street children among others. However there were some challenges like lack of enough teachers, inadequate learning facilities like desks and infrastructural materials e.g. text books among others.
