- ItemPerceptions of parents on gender differences in mathematics in secondary schools in Arua Municipality, Arua District, Uganda.(Kampala International University, College of Education, Open and Distance Learning, 2003-11) Mundu, Mustafa; M.Over the past two decades, women limited participation in science, technology and mathematics (SMT) courses in tertiary institutions have been a cause for a concern in Uganda. Women today, constitute over half of the world population. This research was designed to investigate the present situation of female participation in SMT in Arua Municipality, visa-a vis the effects of this limited participation on national development. Data for the study were obtained from a survey conducted in two Local Government Di\ ision Areas of Oil Rivcr and Ama Hill divisions, the west Nile region head quarters. Questionnaires, guided inte~iews and focus group discussions were among the methods used in soliciting for the data from the respondents. A total of 100 students, 40 parents and 50 teachers were successfully interviewed. The result obtained confirms the earlier assertion that female are underrepresented in SMT. It also showed that more than 70% of the parents, 66% of teachers and 76% of students accepted that there was gender disparity in SMT;socialization processes inculcated gender biases through the different roles and responsibilities assigned to girls and boys. A package of communication strategies are therefore recommended to encourage teachers and researchers to recognize prejudicial practices which may still disadvantage girls particularly within classrooms, even where policy and statistics suggest that equality has been achieved. Also, career guidance teachers should play a major role in showing girls how to choose subjects combination in high school which suits their aptitudes and, family members should encourage girls to take up scientific programs.
- ItemAn Investigation on Multiple Intelligences and Students Academic Performance at Kampala International University (A Case Study of Faculty of Education).(Kampala International University, School of Education, 2006-04) Kiggundu, Zaharah FaridahToday one of the factors affecting students learning abilities in institutions of higher learning in Africa is that of the rigid curriculum. Particularly, poor teaching methods, poor learning environment and rigid curriculum among others have ignored students’ multiple intelligences since the colonial era in Africa. Since then, the Ministry of Education and Sports in Uganda has undergone difficult times, coupled by frequent changes in government policies which have still ignored the multiple intelligences of students in regard to Education. Of particular concern to this study is the different learning abilities of students in Universities a case of Kampala International University which due to the rigid curriculum has made multiple intelligences of students ignored for decades on end. Continually student’s intelligences have continued to remain isolated, ignored and unprotected leading to poor performances in Universities. In the context of the rigid curriculum, this study entitled An Investigation on Multiple Intelligences and students Academic Performance at Kampala International University, delves into an investigation of Students intelligences and their performance. The study was guided by a number of objectives. Particularly, the study determined the different kinds of intelligence, influence of multiple intelligences on students’ level of performance and the relationship between the levels of intelligences and students academic performance. A total of 400 students, were ,~JOiV~ /~ ‘Ill %. xlv l~POSTGRADUATE f~ ~ .5/ 110 were considered for the study. The primary data was collected using a self administered questionnaire and secondary for literature review. Slovene’s formula was used to select the sample size determination of the respondents together with a cross sectional survey design and random sampling. The findings of the study reveled that; students were multiply intelligent; there are no significance differences in the types of multiple intelligences between males and females, that MI has no influence on student’s performance. There was no significant relationship between the multiple intelligences of students and individual students and their academic performance. The study recommended that lecturers and curriculum developers need to adopt a policy or instruction that favors the different intelligence of each student and teachers should make learning student-centered. Conclusion drawn indicated that poor performance of students may be affected by other factors other than multiple intelligences.
- ItemAttitude and performance in selected primary schools in Rakai district: Proposed enhancement code of conduct programme(Kampala International University, College of Education, Open and Distance Learning, 2006-10) Kimbowa, Johnbapist IvansThis study investigated the attitude and performance of teachers in selected primary Schools in Rakai District in a bid to propose an enhancement code of conduct programme. The study was carried out in selected primary schools in Rakai District. The study was carried out along a number of objectives which were; to establish whether the teachers’ profession code of conduct has an impact on the attitude and performance of teaches, to find out how the attitude of teachers towards teaching affects their performance and to find out how best can the teachers’ code of conduct be understood. The study was carried out using self-administered questionnaire to the teachers and administrators of the selected schools. Oral interviews and interactions were also made. The study came up with a number of conclusions. For example, it was established that the teachers’ profession code of conduct has an influence on the attitude and performance of teachers. From the study, a number of recommendations were made which include the need for education managers and all stakeholders to endeavour to encourage teachers to develop a positive attitude towards their profession, which will lead to good performance
- ItemA study on universal primary education and pupils' performance of selected primary schools in kirewa sub County Tororo District: 2001 – 2005 proposed improvement(Kampala International University, College of Education, Open and Distance Learning, 2006-11) Owor, Chrissy OdoiIn educational system, primary education is the core offering a foundation where all the proceeding education (higher levels) is laid upon when the student is still young but very receptive. To be successful in this education its quality should be emphasized by all the stakeholders. , In some sections of the society especially in rural areas, this vital education is not given its due regard resulting into low performance. The study on UPE and pupils' performance in the selected primary schools in Kirewa Sub County, Tororo district 2001-2005 was chosen for the investigation. The objectives of the study was to determine the level of pupils' performance in these selected schools. However, the findings suggested that UPE programme was a failure as most pupils did not pass PLE to continue with their education due to the prevailing conditions such as inadequate classrooms, no seating facilities, no lunch provision, low qualification of teachers, big class size in these schools. These were the problems for which this study is seeking to establish the answers for the quality of the Universal Primary Education can be improved upon. Different schools of thought were consulted to affirm the conditions under which these Universal Primary Education (UPE) schools operate in order to modify and get solutions for them so as to realize better results. These results were examined for comparison, analysis and gave possible recommendations and suggestions to better the existing performances in these schools.
- ItemParents reactions towards universal primary education in selected primary schools, Kyegonza Sub-County Mpigi District(Kampala International University , College of Education, Open & Distance Learning, 2006-11) Ssentamu, Cissy. NThe study was basically to find out the reaction of parent ~PE policy in five selected schools in Kyegonza sub county. The researcher used a cross sectional survey design with both qualitative and quantitative aspects. The stakeholder of UPE policy was consulted. For example parents, head teachers, local leaders, teachers. Stratified random sampling was used to select the Parents, solven’s equation to determine the sample size of teachers and purposive sampling to select the sample size of opinion leaders. The quantitative data was analyzed descriptively in form of frequency distribution tables, graphs and percentages by summarizing the variables on the reactions of parents towards Universal Primary Educational policy the study was conducted in Mpigi district Kyegonza Sub County. The researcher used random sampling to select five schools from the ten Government aided schools. The study employed interviews, questionnaires and focus group discussion to collect data from respondents. The total sample size of parents constituted 143; 35 teachers; 5 head teachers and 4 opinion leaders. The benefit brought about by the UPE policy where parents indicated a positive attitude were that, the introduction of UPE policy helped some children whose parents or guardians had failed to raise tuition fees also to attain primary education, reduced the school fees burden that was

The study tried to establish the relationship between motivation and performance. The study used both primary and secondary sources to gather information. The primary source were mainly the questionnaires, and the secondary sources was library work and established records to enhance the raw data collected. The purpose of the study was to examine the effect f various dissatisfactions that is; Salary paid, conditions for effective teaching, and interpersonal relations on performance of teachers in Kakugulu Memorial School The researcher used a descriptive research method to determine the level of motivation and performance of teachers in Kakungulu Memorial Schoool Findings indicate that working conditions had a significant effect on the performance of the teaching staff of Kakungulu Memorial School. Salary received also has a significant effect on the performance of the teaching staff. Findings further indicates that respondents are not happy with the meager Salaries and the limited allowances in the school and they appealed for an increment.

It centers around the following objectives; the relationship, between the family socio-economic status and the child academic performance; parent’s educational level have an influence on the chlld~c academic petformance; the influence of school environment and whether the naturalfactors affectthe academicperformance. This study utilized both qualitative and quantitative methods utilizing 1590 pupils and54 teachers from PrimarySchools ofNsambya Central Parish A researcher made questionnaire, interview observation and check lists were used as research instruments. Frequency andpercentages, calculated mean and factor correlation coefficient were used The study based on a problem which is not only in the research environment but in the whole country and the continent at large, for example almost every year town schools outperform village schools. The findings indicate that the parents’ sodo-economic status which indude the parents incomes, the parents level of education, family assets and the parent’s social position in the society proved to be the major cause of the differences in the pupil academic performance. The following are recommended to the government:, School administrators and parents Teachers as of educational facilities should have a balanced view of children from various S~ES background as to blend their teaching so that all will benefit equally. Parents whether HS~S. middle LES or Low LES should strive to provide minimum extra incentive for the children in the school. The school administration should provide a conducive atmosphere for the children to learn even for those who don’t opportunity to have access to extra learning facilities at home.In conclusion, therefore, the research efforts revealed that parents’ S~ES can greatly Influence academic performance of their children, It was revealed that there could be other factors contributing to academic performance which were outside the premises of this research. However,. I was able to determine a relations,o between parentheses academic performance primarily school children in the study area and found out that there are strong relations,os in between the two variables.

It identifies potential explanations for Social Responsibility, evaluation of various forms of Social Responsibility, obstacles to school Social Responsibility, challenges of low social responsibility and proposed improvement program. Specifically, it is made up of five chapters. Chapter one is introductory, chapter two is literature review, chapter three concerns research methodology, chapter four is Data processing, analysis and interpretation while five is discussions, recommendations and conclusions. The objectives of this research were as follows; To evaluate the forms of social responsibility of Bishop Cyprian High School to all its stakeholders, to analyze the contribution of social responsibility towards eradication of socio-economic problems, to examine the obstacles deterring full social responsibility of schools and to determine the possible improvement program for social responsibility of Bishop Cyprian High School to the community. xiv The research design was majorly qualitative but quantitative data analysis techniques ware also used. The main technique of Data collection used was questionnaires, observation and photography. According to findings, this research has made it clear that social responsibility leads to reduction and solution of socio economic problems. Among others, it leads to risk reduction, staff retention, cost savings, cordial relationship with all stakeholders, reduction in moral decay, unemployment, ignorance, poverty. However, many schools fail to realize this because of obstacles like lack of enough resources and skills, limited awareness of stakeholders' demands, limited time, organization policy and other problems. Finally, recommendations include: initiating income generating projects for staff to supplement on salary, more care for government concerns, offer of more vocational education, high level of transparency of the school and accountability to its owners, among others.

- ItemSchool-based managerial challenges of universal primary education in selected primary schools of Kabale Municipal Town, Uganda(Kampala International University , College of Education, Open & Distance Learning, 2007-09) Kahuku, CharityThe purpose of this study was to establish the school-based managerial challenges caused by excessive pupil enrollments to the control of the quality of education and to the motivation of teachers and pupils to respectively achieve the desired teaching and learning performance in Universal Primary Education (UPE) schools in Kabale Municipal Town. This was prompted by the observation that although all UPE schools witnessed excessive pupil enrolments, not much was known about the challenges that such enrolments posed to school managers. The study was conducted as cross sectional survey. Its objectives were to establish the managerial challenges that excessive enrolments caused to the (1) control of educational quality; (2) motivation of teachers to achieve desired teaching performance; and (3) motivation of pupils to achieve the desired learning performance. Data were collected using questionnaires administered to purposively selected headteachers and to teachers and pupils selected using convenience sampling. Data were analyzed using qualitative and quantitative methods of analysis with the aid of Excel and the descriptive, Chi Square and ANOVA methods of SPSS program. Results indicate that the challenges caused by excessive pupil enrolment to the motivation of teachers included: : a leadership vacuum in the administrative relationship between headteachers and teachers; poor parent and government facilitation of the environment that supports headteachers to motivate teachers and inadequacy of the teachers needed to achieve the standard teacher-pupils ratios in UPE schools. The challenges caused to the motivation of pupils were: poor facilitation of pupils’ learning environment, failure to feed pupils when they are at school, inability to discipline pupils and shape their behavior as desired, and failure to do what pupils expect in order to feel adequately motivated to learn as desired. The challenges caused to the control of educational quality were: failure to maintain the desired learning climate in the oversqueezed yet poorly equipped classrooms; poor quality ofteaching resulting from inadequate and inadequately qualified and facilitated teachers; and overstretched supervision of teachers and pupils. The study therefore concludes by underscoring the need to address these challenges through government adequately facilitating the administrative environment that supports school managers to motivate teachers and pupils and control the quality of education in UPE schools. Headteachers should also effectively improve their supervision of teachers and pupils. Further research is also recommended into all the challenges of UPE right from the national to municipal levels.

The study centered on four specific objectives namely, to; Investigate into whether SFP has motivated pupils’ enrolment, attendance and performance in primary schools in Gulu district. Investigate into whether SFP has reduced of gender disparity in the primary schools in Gulu district. Investigate whether SFP has influenced parental involvement and stakeholder participation in the management and governance in the primary schools in Gulu district. And, Investigate into whether SEP has contributed to improvement in the teaching-learning process and the general effectiveness of primary schools in Gulu district. The study is based on three theories of motivation and human needs. The first theory is the hierarchy of human needs theory by Abraham Maslow, the other theories are; Clayton Aderfer’s Existence, Relatedness and Growth (ERG) theory and lastly, B. E. Skinner’s Reinforcement theory. The study also adopts the theoretical and conceptual frameworks on the review of literature and research investigations are built. Four instruments have been used in this research namely; questionnaires, interviews, Focused Group Discussions (EGDs) and observations. The main tools were questionnaires which were divided into two sets, one set for head teachers and another for classroom teachers. Thirty two (32) primary schools in Gulu municipaIity are used as a sample for the purpose of this study with each head teacher answering questionnaires and interviews. Also eight (8) classroom teachers totaling two hundred and fifty four (254) from each of the thirty two primary schools were administered questionnaires. Interviews and focused Group discussions were conducted with 3 education officials ( DEO, MEO, and Inspector of schools) and with purposely selected Parents Teachers Association (PTA) and School Management Committees (SMC) of the selected schools.

The research answered the following questions: what is the effect of the levels of head teachers’ instructional supervision skills on the performance of teachers in public primary schools in Makindye division? to what extent have the teachers fulfilled their pedagogical responsibilities in public primary schools in Makindye division? what is the effect of instructional supervision skills available among head teachers in public primary schools in Makindye division? A cross section design method was used to collect data for this study. Simple random sampling technique (raffle) was used to select 30 schools, and 300 teachers for the study. The thirty head teachers were purposively selected from the thirty schools that were part of the study. The findings of the study were: the level of head teachers’ instructional supervision skills in public primary schools was deficient; there was a direct relationship between the head teachers’ instructional supervision skills and teachers’ fulfillment of pedagogical roles in classroom. Therefore, the research concluded that the quality of head teachers’ instructional supervision skills was still a far cry. Recommendations made included involving other school personnel in instructional supervision; a staff development program for each school should be developed.

- ItemMotivation and performance of teachers in private secondary schools: a case study of central college kawempe(Kampala International University, College/School of Education, 2007-10) Sangaire, Eddie MorgaThe topic of this study was Motivation and Performance of Teachers in Private Secondary Schools: A Case Study of Central College Kawempe. The study was carried out under three objectives, namely; Identifying the effect of allowances paid to teachers of Central College Kawempe, on their Performance, determining the effect of salary paid to teachers of Central College Kawempe, on their performance; and examining the effect of Late Payment of salary, on Teacher Performance in Central College Kawempein the methodology, the study relied on primary and secondary sources of information. Primary sources included; questionnaire guides, while secondary sources included official school records, which tried to provide information about the school, its background, and other vital background information about the school. The study was based on the theory of Hertzberg (two factor theory of motivation) where Hertzberg identified two types of motivation, i.e. hygiene factors and motivators. It is up on this that the researcher based his theoretical framework. The design of the study was a descriptive survey research. The school had 723 students, out of which the study utilized 60 students of the top three classes,i.e twenty students each from senior four,five;and six respectively. Twenty Teachers out of twenty eight were used, to provide information. In the findings, allowances, salary and late payment of salary were discovered to have a significant effect on teacher performance in Central College Kawempe. Respondents (teachers) were not happy about the issues of allowances, salary and late payments, and hence conditions at work were not condusive for effective performance. The study recommended that, Head Teachers and Directors of private secondary schools should; provide basic allowances to their teachers, pay a reasonable salary to teachers; and salary should be paid on time, in order to attain high teacher performance.

The study was guided by three objectives To establish how secondary school administration contributes o moral upbringing of students. To establish how secondary school curriculum and instruction contribute to moral upbringing of students, To establish how secondary school-hidden curriculum contribute to moral upbringing ofstudents The study used descriptive survey deign with cross sectional survey with both qualitative and quantitative approaches. Data was collected using questionnaires and interview guides. It was collected from students, teachers, head teachers and community members, it was analyzed using Chi square test, frequency counts and percentages and content analysis for data obtained from unstructured interviews. The study established and concluded that secondary school administration contributes to moral upbringing of student, classroom content and instruction and hidden curriculum have moral attributes to the students. The study recommended among other that schools administration and staff should be exemplary before the students. Classroom instruction should bring out moral ingredients and school administration should monitor the hidden curriculum. The researcher suggested the following areas for the research. 1. The role ofC.R.E. in the moral upbringing of students in secondary schools. 2. The influence home background in the moral formation and development of students.
- ItemPreparation of student teachers for school practice in south western Uganda primary teachers' colleges(Kampala international international: College of Education, open and distance learning, 2007-11) Benjamin, ByesigwaThe study set out to investigate the approaches to preparation of student teachers for school practice in Primary Teachers' colleges, It was guided by the following research questions and hypothesis: • What are the specific approaches tutors use when preparing student teachers for school practice? • What are the challenges do student teachers in Primary Teachers' Colleges face during preparation for school practice? It also tested the following hypothesis: • Tutors do not conduct themselves professionally during preparation ofstudent teachers for school practice. The study targeted 1620 students in year one and two. It covered 33 tutors and 4 principals. The qualitative and quantitative methods of investigation were employed in collecting data. The quantitative approach used the structured questionnaire while the qualitative approach used open ended questionnaire, interviews, observation and focus group discussions. The qualitative data was logically analyzed while the hypothesis was statistically tested whereby the chi-square test was calculated. The findings of the study revealed that: 1. there are no specific approaches and guidelines followed in Primary Teachers' Colleges in order to produce the particular kind of teachers required. Tutors generally use teacher-centered approaches in their day-to-day teaching and only think about preparing students for school practice during the period when students are going to the field for school practice. 2. Primary Teachers' Colleges are generally poorly staffed. A lot of work is done by part-time teachers from neighboring secondary schools that only target academic part of the course. 3. The professional conduct of tutors leaves a lot to be desired. A lot of unprofessional practices are exhibited by some tutors and compromise the quality of teachers produced and brings the profession into disrepute. In light of the findings of the study, it was recommended that: 1. Preparation of students for school practice should be on-going right from the beginning of the course up to the end. Tutors' own practice plays a big role in preparing student teachers for school practice. They should therefore use learner-centred approaches in all their practices so that their trainees can emulate them and each topic taught, teaching implication should be given. 2. Ministry of Education and sports should consider Primary Teachers' Colleges a priority area during recruitment and posting of teachers; bearing in mind that, no country can be better than its education system and no education system can be batter than its teachers. - ItemSocial problems faced by non-resident undergraduate students of Kampala international university Western campus(Kampala international international: College of Education, open and distance learning, 2008-01) Lydia, K RwakishayaThis study was designed to investigate the social problems that non-resident students of Kampala International University-Western Campus face in their places of residence during their course of study. The study targeted 169 out of 300 students, 10 out of 15 landlords and 5 out of 9 University administrators. The study set out to establish the suitability of accommodation facilities for non-resident students, the state of the prevailing feeding, health and sanitation conditions in and around residences and the social/behavioral problems which non-resident students of KIU-WC face. The study used a survey research design. Both qualitative and quantitative techniques were used in collecting and analyzing the data. Three research instruments were used in the study a questionnaire was used to collect information from students, the observation was used to assess the conditions in and around residences and interview was used to collect information from administrators and landlords. The instruments were administered to the respondents accordingly. Two research questions and one hypothesis were developed to guide the study and these were; are the accommodation facilities of the non-resident students suitable? What are the prevailing feeding, health and sanitation conditions in and around non-resident students' residences? There are no significant social/behavioral problems facing non-resident students of KIU-WC. The data collected was interpreted, discussed and analyzed using tables and percentages. Statistical analysis was also employed using the Chi- square(X2 )test. The findings of the study revealed that non-resident students reside in hostels and other rented rooms around Bushenyi Ishaka towns, majority of whom share rooms. Findings revealed that accommodation facilities are inadequate and lacking to cater for the needs of the students. It was found out that students were paying high rental charges. It was also found out that it was insecure for non- residents’ students to move to the University library back to their residences at night. The state of feeding, health and sanitation were found to be poor and lacking. It was revealed that some students took up to preparing their own meals but this was inconvenient as it interfered with their study programs. The poor and un hygiene sanitation facilities found in the places of residences posed a health hazard. The study revealed that cohabiting, drankardness, drug abuse, fighting and quarrels were common in non - resident students’ residences, especially those in a high sensitive health reproductive age. It also revealed difficulty for the University administration to enforce rules/regulations on the residence facilities since it does not have authority. The researcher recommended that; • The University administration should liase with the landlords to make sure that accommodation facilities are improved upon and minimal rental charges are paid. • The management should establish an intensive data base which will enable regular monitoring of feeding, health and sanitation situation regarding non-resident undergraduate students. • Effie should be made to ensure that singles sex hostels are put in place by landlords to address the issue of social/behavioral problems such as cohabiting, unwanted pregnancies, alcoholism and other sexual and social related risks among students.

This research was guided by the four research questions. 1. What functions do managers perform? 2. How do managers manage these institutions? 3. What are the common cases of mismanagement in private secondary schools in Wakiso District? 4. What reasons explain the mismanagement of private secondary schools in Wakiso District? The study was carried out using a population of 80 subjects, which included 40 students and 40 staff. Data collection instruments included interviews which were used during a face to face discussion with the respondents to obtain relevant and accurate information, use of self-administered questionnaires with both open and close ended questions and documentary review which included published materials in libraries, institutional reports and records. The researcher employed both qualitative and quantitative methods of data analysis to enable easy interpretation and comprehension of data. All the 80 respondents indicated that private secondary schools have collapsed because of mismanagement. The major cause of mismanagement in this case is poverty, that leads to all other forms of mismanagement which include non, low and even delayed payment of staff, embezzlement of funds to mention but a few. From the above findings, the following recommendations were made:
- ItemAn analysis of teachers’ perception on the relationship between reward, compensation and performance of secondary school teachers in Bugiri District, Uganda(Kampala International University, College of Education, Open & Distance Learning, 2008-08) Tesfit, Mekonen KidaneThe purpose of the study was to investigate teachers’ perception and their relationship between reward, compensation, and their performance. Hence, it examined the relationship between fairly rewarded and c compensated teachers and their performance the relationship between highly motivated teachers and their performance, and the relationship between the effectiveness and efficiency of the school and the motivational level of its teachers. In gathering information, the research study employed both primary and secondary sources. The primary source was mainly the distributed questionnaires and the secondary sources were the library work and internet explorer. The study used survey as its research design. Five Secondary Schools from Bugiri District, Uganda were purposely selected to serve as a sample. However, in selecting the respondents, random sampling was used. Fifty teachers, ten from each school and twenty five students, five from each school make the sample population. Tables and charts were used in organizing the data and Pearson’s correlation coefficient was the technique employed in analyzing the collected data. From the findings of the study, it was revealed that the relationship between fairly rewarded and compensated teachers and their teaching performance, the relationship between highly motivated teachers and their teaching performance, and the relationship between the effectiveness and efficiency of the school and the motivational level of its teachers were significant. The findings further indicate that teachers were not happy with their school’s rewarding and compensating system. The study therefore, recommended that remuneration of the teachers should be improved and given on time. The schools also need to provide reasonable allowance and establish a conducive atmosphere through which the teachers could be motivated to perform their tasks well.
