- ItemConstraints Faced By Primary School Head Teachers in Implementing HIV/AIDS Programmes in Kamukunji Division Nairobi North District Kenya(Kampala International University, College of Education and Open, long Distance learning, 2000-12) Kipkorir, JosphatThe purpose of the study was to investigate the problems faced by primary school head teachers in implementing illV/AIDS programme in schools in Kamukunji Division, Nairobi North District. The research questions focused on the methods and techniques used in teaching HIV/AIDS programme implementation, head teachers' and pupils' attitude towards HIV/AIDS programme implementation, and the problems the head teachers face while implementing HIV/AIDS programme in primary schools. Literature review focused on the background to the situation ofillV/AIDS, its impact on economic development, to the learners, implementation of HIV/AIDS education programme, teaching techniques and the teachers role in HIV /AIDS education programme implementation. The study employed survey research design. The sample was all the 26 headteachers and Teachers Living With Aids (TLWA) and Teachers Against Aids (TAA) in the division. Data was collected from headteachers in public and private primary schools in the division. Findings revealed that lack of training on the part of the headteachers on IDV / AIDS has hindered the implementation of the programme. It was also revealed that schools used methods and techniques discussions, resource persons, lecture and also used electronic methods such as videos and handling the programme according to the levels oflearners in teaching the programme. Schools also had special programmes in their schools concerning illV/AIDS for pupils which included videos and drama; having banners and V artistic work on walls as a way of sensitization. Schools however did not have specialized teachers to handle the programme. It was also revealed that the headteachers had a positive attitude towards the programme. Findings further revealed that the headteachers faced problems with infected and the affected pupils. This was due to absenteeism of the pupils, lack of proper nutrition due to the prevailing poverty levels in the division which affected pupils learning in high schools. It also revealed that headteachers faced challenges which included lack of resources both physical and financial which hindered proper implementation of the programme. Based on the above findings it was also recommended that the government through the Kenya Institute of Education suggest and avail the necessary and adequate teaching and learning materials for easier implementation of HIV/AIDS programme. It was also recommended that the government through the Constituency Development Fund (CDF) should come up and assist infected pupils with basic necessities so that they are able to participate in the schools. The study suggested that a study on the impact ofHN/AIDS on academic performance in primary schools should be conducted. Another study on the attitude of teachers and students on HIV/ AIDS in primary schools should be conducted, lastly since this study was carried out in Kamukuji Division of Nairobi Province which is an urban set up, there is need to carry out a similar research in other districts preferably rural to establish what challenges faced in those areas.

Odhong, ObullThe study focused on the impact of teacher's quality and teaching resources in teaching maths in secondary schools on the performance of Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE). Performance of the learners is a basic indicator of effective learning. Grade scored in internal examinations are normally used as measures of the subjects. In this study, the researcher looked into qualifications, experience of teachers, teaching resources and the methods employed during instruction. The study further established that there are other factors that contribute to performance apart from the teacher's quality and teaching resources. Simple random and strategic sampling techniques were used. The sampled candidates were given questionnaires to fill in. Descriptive and inferential statistics were used. The researcher hopes that the findings of the study will be of great importance to the mathematics learners, educators, parents and society at large.

- ItemDrug Abuse and Students Discipline of Wajir Girls Secondary School in Wajir Central, Kenya(Kampala International University, school of science with education, 2007) Ismail Salat, HusseinThe purpose of this study was to investigate drug abuse and discipline of girls of Wajir girls’ school in wajir central in Wajir district, Kenya. The specific objectives of the study were to determine the relationship between drug abuse and the discipline of girls, identify the common drugs abused by girls and the effects of drugs on students. The methods used for data collection were questionnaires to the students and interviews with the teachers. The findings revealed that students who abused drugs had indiscipline cases and were therefore likely to drop out of school. It was revealed that the common drugs girls abused were alcohol, marijuana and cocaine. The study that drugs mostly affected the schooling of students since they did not concentrate in class. The study recommended that the ministry of the education and school authorities should provide preventive measures by checking what enters in school and also discourage students from taking drugs and also counsel those that are already taking drugs. The community and parents are important in a child’s life. They should therefore be sensitized and encouraged to participate in all programs that aim to solve the problem of drugs. The government should also include them in all the plans they make concerning the fight against drug abuse
- ItemTeachers’ attitudes towards inclusion of learners with hearing Impairment in regular Classrooms in dandora Zone Nairobi Kenya(Kampala international international: College of Education, open and distance learning, 2007-04) Lucy, N. MutugiThe study was about the teacher's attitudes towards inclusion of learners hearing impairments in regular classrooms in Dondora Zone, Nairobi -Kenya. The major respondents were regular primary teachers who were randomly selected from the four schools within the zone. The total number of respondents were twenty, five from every school. The study employed both qualitative and quantitative research design to determine the inclusion of learners with hearing impairments in regular schools. Questionnaire were then prepared using the specific objectives from the title of the study and given to the respondents to give their response. Data was then collected and analyzed inform of tables, pie charts and graphs. The objectives were to find out the regular teachers' knowledge and understanding of the hearing impairment learners. The teachers' knowledge and understanding on provision of education for hearing impaired learners. The teachers' views and attitudes towards the inclusion of leari1cr~with hearing impairment in regular schools. Major findings shows that the teachers had knowledge and understanding of the hearing impaired learners. This was because they were able to identify these learners with hearing impairments. They were also able to know the major cause of hearing impairment which is diseases. The hearing impaired should also be educated because they are normal children and have a right to be educated like the others non impaired. They should be handled by a specialist teacher. The hearing impaired should also be allowed to follow the regular school curriculum and allowed to learn with the non- impaired learner. Recommendations made from the study were training more teachers on special education so as to handle learners with hearing impairments in regular schools. Having a flexible curriculum to meet the needs of learners with hearing impairments. Equipping the regular schools with specialist material and equipment to cater for the learners needs. The hearing impaired learner should be allowed to follow the regular school curriculum and handled by a specialist teacher. From the study it can be concluded that the teachers have knowledge and understanding of the hearing impairment. The hearing impaired should be provided with education, included in regular schools handled by a specialist teacher. The curriculum should be modified to allow flexibility in the exam.

Design: This study employed the descriptive survey method of investigation. Environment: This study was conducted in Kwihota Primary School of Thika District in Kenya.The school is located in Thika District, Ruiru Town about 4 kms off Thika-Nairobi Highway. Respondents: This study involved 154 pupils in upper primary which were included 50 from Primary Six (P6), 54 pupils from Primary Seven (P7) and 50 from Primary Eight (PS). Instrument: This study was a researcher devised instrument which was a questionnaire that contained questions about the profile of the respondents as to age, gender, class and level of teaching performance in four areas namely: teaching resources, teaching methods, teacher's qualities and classroom management.

The researcher used quantitative research approach with preference to survey method to determine the educational problems encountered by the physically handicapped children in the 8-4-4 system. The study was conducted in Nkubu Division, Meru Central District Kenya in three selected primary schools, which included Ntharene, Nkubu and Muguru. The schools are in the same area and cater for children with Special Needs in Education. The study involved 300 pupils- 100 pupils from Nkubu, 100 from Muguru and 100 from Ntharene Primary Schools. The information was gathered through use of questionnaires given to the respondents who in this care were pupils, parents and head teachers. This study the researcher employed two techniques namely: observation and questionnaires. Questionnaires were open-ended whereas some were close ended type. The researcher visited the three schools, gave them questionnaires to fill and later collected them in person.
- ItemAn Assessment on the Challenges Facing Girl- Child Education among the Namads in Kenya: A Case Study of Bute Division Wajir District.(Kampala International University, bachelors degree of education, 2007-04) Omar Enow, AdanMigrants, and particularly nomads, are among the most marginalized social groups, and are widely excluded from educational provision, despite pledges of education for all. The phenomenon of movement itself presents many challenges for both providers, and would be users, of educational services. Around the world, the provision of education for nomads has reflected and been instrumental to particular stances on pastoral development. The links between education and development are explored specifically in the case of a transhumant pastoral group in North Eastern Kenya. The research paper reveals education for all as an ideological notion, reflecting values that contradict those of nomadic groups and argues that the value positions underlying this notion need to be articulated and further contextualized if it is not simply to reflect existing, and exclusive hegemonies.
- ItemThe role of women in the Socio-Economic development of Yumbe District: a case study of Yumbe Town Council(Kampala International University; College of Education Open and Distance Learning, 2007-05) Salama, BashirThis research looked at factors influencing the role of women in Socio -Economic development. The dimensions of the study included the role of women in Socio - Economic activities, problems facing women and the role of NGOs in helping the women in the settlement. Overall objective was to stimulate the role of women in the Town Council by generating some income to help particularly the women to provide in the families. The study was conducted within five selected women groups' Owologa, young parents, Charaga, Dichiru and Hotel women group. These groups are located in the town Centre. The sample included women of ages between 15 and 49, staff of NGOs, widows which altogether comprised 50 respondents. The study was both qualitative and quantitative. Therefore multi-cluster group sampling was used to select five women groups in the District. Systematic random sampling was used to select the quantitative sample. The 50 respondents were purposively selected. Data collection was done by the researcher herself. The quantitative data, questionnaires were given to women with the help of the women leaders in the district who filled them in while getting some instructions from the researcher. The researcher interviewed the informants with the help of interview guides/schedule. The findings of the study showed that the problems facing women in their social economic development/activities are the major factors influencing the role of women in the District. It was followed by the roles of NGOs in helping the women in the District in order to settle or solve their problems by a greater percentage helping the government to reduce poverty in the District.

Specifically, these data were gathered: profile of teachers as to age, gender, marital status, teaching experience, educational qualification; the level of discipline in terms of rules and regulations, pupils' behavior, communication skills and school/home environment; the level of academic performance; the significant relationship between level of discipline and level of academic performance; and the significant difference between Ugandan and Sudanese pupils in terms of level of discipline and level of academic performance. Design: This study employed the descriptive survey method of investigation. Environment: This study was conducted in primary school known as Uganda Martyrs Primary School Lubaga. It is a government aided school located south of Kampala near the Archbishop's residence on Lubaga hill, church zone, Lubaga division, Kampala district, Uganda. Respondents: This study involved 6 teachers and 64 Ugandan pupils and 64 Sudanese pupils of primary four, five and six. Teachers were selected basing on two categories namely: class teachers and teachers in English subject. V Instruments: This study utilized a researcher devised instruments which were the following: the questionnaire that contained questions about profile of the respondents as to age, gender, marital status, teaching experience, educational qualification and the level of discipline in four areas namely: rules and regulations, pupils' behavior, communication skills and school/home environment. They were rated as follows: 4 strongly agree (you agree with no doubt at all), 3 agree (you agree with some doubt), 2 disagree (you disagree with some doubt), and 1 strongly disagree (you disagree with no doubt at all); and record sheet which was utilized to find out the level of academic performance of Ugandan and Sudanese pupils.
- ItemTeaching process and learning of pupils in kiswahili language of selected primary schools in Wakiso District, Uganda(Kampala International University. College of Education, Open and Distance Learning, 2007-06) Nyaboke, Ruth BonukeObjectives: This study investigated the teaching process and learning of pupils in Kiswahili language in selected primary schools in Wakiso District, Uganda. Specifically, this study determined the profile of the teachers as to age, gender, marital status, educational qualification and number of years in service and pupils as to age and gender. This study determined the degree of teaching and learning process in terms of attitude, availability of teachers, culture, policies, availability of resources and training and level of learning in terms of attitude, availability of teachers, culture and availability of resources, and determined the significant relationship between degree of teaching process and level of learning of pupils in Kiswahili language. Design: This study employed the descriptive survey method of investigation. Respondents: This study were involved 50 teachers and 150 P7 pupils, wherein 10 teachers and 50 pupils from Joseph’s Boarding Primary School, 10 teachers and 50 pupils from St. Theresa’s Bunamwaya Primary School, 10 teachers and 50 pupils from Gayaza Primary School, 10 teachers and 50 pupils from Nsangi Primary School and 10 teachers and 50 pupils from Kyengera Primary School, these are located in Wakiso District, Uganda Findings: The findings revealed the following: the age mean of teachers was 30.28 and age mean of pupils was 14.79; the degree of teaching process were evaluated generally fair (mean= 1.93); the level of learning of pupils was fair (mean=1.99). It was evident that the degree of teaching process was not significantly related to the level of learning of pupils. Conclusion: Based on the findings, it is concluded that the teaching process and learning of pupils in Kiswahili language were evaluated generally fair. However, these aspects are needed to be improved. Recommendations: The recommendation on the findings was implement the policy concerning the teaching process and learning of pupils in Kiswahili language in the schools.

A Case Study Of Selected Primary Schools in Kipsaraman Division Baringo District, Kenya(Kampala International University, School of Education, Open and Distance and E-learning, 2007-06) Juma, Hellen J.The main purpose of the study was to determine the relationship between school facilities and students performance. Specific objectives were to find out some of the effects of inadequate facilities at school on the academic achievement of learners. The methods used for data collection were questionnaires to the pupils. The findings from the study indicated that lack of physical facilities which was supported by 80% inadequate facilities, 50% miss use of the available facilities are among the factors that affect academic performance of pupils. The study recommended that the government through the constituency Development fund should build complete classrooms in time.
- ItemThe impact of poverty on academic performance: a case study of Gedeli primary school Ilemela district (Tanzania(Kampala International University, College of Education Open and Distance Learning, 2007-06) Gombanila, AliceThe study sought to investigate the effect of poverty in academic performance. This was achieved by investigating the effects of poverty on academic performance and investigating solutions to the effects of poverty on academic performance. A case study design was employed in the study. The researcher adopted this case study design because the study concentrated on a particular area, which was generalised to the rest of the region. For the study, total of 80 participants. An interview guide was constructed and used to collect information from students. A questionnaire was also designed and used to collect information from teachers. The researcher also used observation and guided discussions to get more information.This study showed that pupils from low-income families were greatly affected by the lack of financial facilitation such as school fees and scholastic materials. Other hindrances were poor hygiene both at home and at school and a persistent ailment of malaria caused by lack of mosquito nets. This led them to miss school and fail to perform well in their academics. Lack of adequate meals accounted for the greatest proportion of poor performers as reported by both teachers and pupils. Poor learning environment was another reported major cause of poor performance. This was all due to lack of finances from both parents and school and was worsened by the shear number of pupils that the teachers had to teach. As a result the limited number of teachers were made to teach two sessions, one in the morning and the other in the afternoon which led them not to pay great attention to the pupils which resulted in poor performance. The study findings in general agreed with the findings of the authors cited in the literature review. The major recommendations included the government encourage teachers through increase of their salaries and wages as the performance of the pupils depends highly on them and facilitate schools with grants to enable them purchase more scholastic materials and build class room blocks.
- ItemTeacher’s training and experience on the academic performance of primary school pupils of Kabarnet zone Baringo district Kenya(Kampala International University, College of Education, Open & Distance Learning, 2007-06) Chepkechei K., JamesThis study was an attempt to establish the relationship between the teacher’s training and experience on the academic performance of primary school pupils. The objectives were clearly started to unveil the relationship of the teacher’s training and experience on the academic performance of learners. The study employed a collection of data using questionnaire technique which was subjected to a cross-section of teachers. Data was analyzed by use of tables and bar graphs. The researcher then discussed the findings as per the objectives presented. The significant relationship between the teachers’ training and experience on the academic performance of pupils was also established. Recommendations, conclusions and areas to note pertaining the findings were clearly highlighted.
