- ItemAn investigation into the challenges for the enjoyment of basic human rights by children in child-headed households in Karongi District, Western Rwanda(Kampala International University.College of Economics and Management, 2007-10) Sarah, Gesare Ong'esaThe study sought to investigate the challenges facing child-headed households (CHHs) in their attempt to enjoy their basic human rights. As such, the study treated variables that included the challenges, coping mechanisms, and community responses to the plight of child-headed households. The instruments used included structured and unstructured questionnaires, interviews, focus group discussions and observation. The target population included 15 local leaders, 10 NGO/CBO staff, 40 children (head of CHHs), and 25 community members. The major findings of the study revealed that child-headed households experience challenges in accessing adequate food, education and health services due to several factors largely attributed to poverty and lack of external support, lack of finances and neglect by the community, which have had negative implications. As a result, children have adapted to means for survival through working in exchange for resources like food and money to meet their survival needs. In most cases children's efforts to eke a living translates to child labor and abrogation of their human rights. The Government of Rwanda has put in place measures to curb some of these challenges by having waivers on fees under universal primary education programme and free health services. However, these measures have not cushioned the impact for the children and as such, they fail to enjoy their human rights. Also, no solid measures have been put in place to address the right to food. Though the community has an opportunity to play a big role in mitigating the problems, their response to the challenges of CHHs has not been sufficient and this is attributed to poverty, lack of involvement of children in matters concerning them and lack of mobilization and sensitization.

- ItemEffects of remuneration on employee performance: a case of German technical corporation Uganda(Kampala International University.College of Humanities and social science, 2008-11) Rachel, W.GathecaThis research was based on the investigation of the effects of remuneration on employee performance in German Technical Corporation Uganda (GTZ). Remuneration is paramount to acquiring competent personnel as well as retaining the present employees, it also aids in securing internal and external equity meaning the payment of similar wages for similar jobs within the organization or other comparable organizations. The comparisons of pay are uninfluenced by levels of aspirations and pay history, often they compare the pay of different employees with their skills, knowledge and performance. Hence GTZ has been experiencing difficulties in rating the performance of their expatriate and local employees due to the introduction of a performance related pay system which doesn't have substantial impact on employee's performance. This has led to reduced motivation which impacts negatively on the achievement of both organizational and individual objectives. It also poses a challenge to management when evaluating performance due to the laxity of employees to maintain the set standards of performance. From the administered study it was established that most employees perceived the organization's performance related pay (PRP) system as vague, complex and not transparent. They were of the opinion that it didn't effectively tie performance to pay, that is, its contribution to the employee's attainment of their goals was low or minimal. Furthermore it was established that the benefits offered by GTZ were insufficient especially to expatriates with accompanying spouse and children due to the fact that their income was from on partner unlike back home where the spouse also worked. While, the single expatriates thought they were more than sufficient. It was recommended that GTZ review their PRP system in order to effectively tie performance to pay, while, at the same time implementing a 'holistic' induction program that minimizes the employee's prejudices. It was also established that there was need to carryout a study on the impact of remuneration on employee's motivation.

However, at SCHQs- Makindye, the concept seemed to have been taken for granted which forced the researcher to end up conducting a detailed research in order to examine the impact of employee relations on the rate of labour stability. The main specific objectives of this study were to investigate the relationship that existed between industrial democracy on the rate if labour stability, the importance of participation and involvement on the rate labour stability and lastly the effects of leadership style on the rate of labour stability respectively. In data collection process, the researcher employed instruments like closed and self administered questionnaires and interviews for primary data and extensive library research for secondary data which were all analyzed using Microsoft excel, presented in tables and pie charts for easy interpretation. In as far as findings are concerned, the study found out that industrial democracy is a road map to knowledge management and a way of streamlining sub-county activities using methods such as delegation, motivation, transparency and good leadership styles. the study further found out that participation and involvement are practices important in promoting decision making process and problem solving activities and that leadership is an integral part of management AND every one's business in an organization justified by the participate style that was popularly used at the sub county. However, the study revealed that the activities which this research rotated on such as industrial democracy, participation and involvement plus leadership style were practiced in favour of the ruling party while segregating other parties at the sub-county. Further more the study found out that the sub-county had inefficient suggestion boxes and poor treatment of employees revealed by low wages and salaries that they were getting compared to the standards of living. Thus, it can be recommended that all sub-county employees should be allowed to participate in the sub-county activities regardless of the political party in which they belong and financial rewards should be properly integrated in the total systems of promoting good employee relations in order for labour stability to prevail at the sub-county.
