Acknowledgements have been made to various personalities who have contributed to the success of this project. The next section has the table of contents followed by the list of figures and tables. A brief definition of terms has been included as the last part of the preliminary pages. Chapter one contains the Introduction part of the work. The researcher has given the background of the work, a statement of the problem, purpose of the study, objectives of the study, scope and finally significance of the study where the beneficiaries of the findings have been outlined. In chapter two, important literary works by various scholars touching on absenteeism have been discussed. The major issues discussed here include the causes, the results and the solutions to absenteeism as viewed by these scholars. Chapter three contains the methodology. Here research design, sampling procedure, instruments and procedure used in the research process has been discussed. Data analysis methods have also been discussed in this chapter. The next Chapter (4) contains the major findings from the research field based on the objectives of research. The final Chapter of this work (5) contains the discussions conclusions and recommendations all based on the research findings.

College of Education, Open and Distance Learning, 2008-09) Godfrey, Michael MukamaMany politicians and educationalists argue that a lot of domestic work, long distances and poor feeding affect the performance of learners in primary schools, so the purpose was to investigate absenteeism and performance of learners in primary school in Nkondo Sub County, Kamuli district. The objectives of the study were to find out how domestic work, long distances and poor feeding affect the performance of learners in primary schools. The instrument that were used included; questionnaires, group discussion, interview and reading the available materials or data. It was carried out in six schools that covered 96 respondents that is six headteachers, 18 teachers and 72 pupils. The findings from the study revealed that pupils and teachers are absent during school hours because of the long distances they move from home to school everyday, poor feeding both at school and home and domestic work they do at home yet they are expected to be at school.

There are direct and opportunity costs of education which has strong negative effects on female educational opportunities. The purpose of this study was to assess the factors influencing performance of girl child education in relation to access, participation and completion rates in Eldoret west district. The study sought to bring out the current state of knowledge on the socio-economic, socio-cultural, school and political factors influencing female participation in education. The study adopted a survey research method. The sample included a 25 head teachers and 150 students. The researcher used questionnaires to collect data. Both qualitative analyses descriptive statistics involving tabulations, graphs and percentages was used to analyze the data. The findings were presented in terms of tables and charts and discussions of the findings after every pictorial presentation. A summary, conclusion and recommendations with suggestion for further diagnostic research were made.

- ItemThe academic performance of orphaned learners in Nandi East District, Ollessos Division, Kenya(Kampala International University, College of Education, Open and Distance Learning, 2009-12) Chumo, Joshua; KibetThis study was carried out to find out the factors hindering the academic performance of orphaned learners in primary schools in Nandi east district. The study involved quite number of respondents from teachers, pupils from upper classes were, selected in a gender conscious manner, The instruments employed in this study were mainly questionnaires, and observations accompanied by interview guides. Data was analyzed by the use of statistical packages where by the responses were coded and edited, then presented in tables, pie-charts and graphs. The following were the major findings of the study; it was discovered that in an attempt to find out whether the orphaned learners experienced social problems that could hinder their educational performance, the teachers were asked questions relating to the girls' inter-personal relationships with other learners and with teachers. They were also asked to describe their academic achievement and to suggest the reasons for the academic performances, and to describe their behaviors in the class and to mention how often they were punished and the main reasons for punishment. Finally the researcher asserted a conclusion basing on the study findings that, the Lack of trained teachers in the regular classes strongly indicates that the girl child learners' educational performance is affected by the teachers' inadequacy in skill for addressing their unfolding realities of being orphaned in relation to their performance.
- ItemAcademic Performance of Pupils of Katala Primary School in Bugiri District, Uganda(Kampala International University, bachelor's degree in primary education, 2007-11) Mathias Kapuuli, BasalirwaObjectives: This study determined the academic performance of pupils of Katala Primary School in Bugiri District, Uganda. Specifically, this study determined the profile of pupils as to age, gender and academic level. It determined the level of academic performance and determined if there is a significant difference in the level of academic performance between male and female pupils. Design: This study employed the descriptive survey method of investigation. Environment: This study was conducted in one of the schools found in Buwunga sub-county, Bukooli County, Bugiri district in Eastern Uganda, preferably Katala primary school. Katala primary school is located 2km off Bugiri, Iganga in a rural setting. Respondents: This study involved 18 pupils wherein 6 pupils from primary five (PS), 6 pupils from primary six (P6) and 6 pupils from primary seven (P7). Instrument: This study utilized a researcher devised instrument which was a record sheet that contained the profile of pupils as to age, gender, academic level and level of academic performance. Data Collection Procedures: The frequencies and percentages were used to determine the profile of pupils and level of academic performance. The paired or related t-test was used to test for significant difference in the level of academic performance between male and female pupils. findings: This study revealed the following: the mean age of the pupils was 13.44; the level of academic performance was good (mean = 53.22); it was evident that there is no significant difference in the level of academic performance between male and female pupils Conclusion: Based on the findings, it was concluded that the academic performance of pupils was rated as good.

- ItemAfforestation and economic development of farmers in Etam Town Council(Kampala International University, College Of Education, Open,Distance And E-Learning, 2019-08) Ebong, GeoffreyThis study meant to find out effects of afforestation on economic development of the farmers. The study was carried out in Etam Town Council, covering four parishes of Chakwara, Arwot, Etam and Awiodyek. A total of five community leaders out of which the most two were sampled from each parish and three from the Town Council; and a total of ten farmers at least two were sampled from each parish. The study intended to find out the types of trees planted, to assess the benefits farmers are getting from afforestation, to examine the attitude of the farmers towards afforestation and to evaluate the challenges faced in afforestation. Interview guides and questionnaires were used to collect data and the data collected was analyzed using qualitative designed. The findings were summarized in figures. The findings declare among other things that fruit trees and wood trees were the most common types of trees that were being planted by the farmers and that was a source of food, income to the farmers. Another finding was that food, income (money), family welfare were some of the benefits that the farmers are getting from afforestation. The finding also said that over 50% of the farmers were interested in afforestation. Another finding was that shortage of land, pests and diseases; prolonged sunshine, negative attitudes by some farmers were some of the factors affecting afforestation. Another finding revealed that the economic status of people practicing afforestation was improving rapidly. Recommendations made in accordance with findings included; advice to the environmental officers and district leadership to provide seedlings and education to farmers, to provide market for the trees, advising farmers to use the little piece of land they have to plant at least some few seedlings yearly alongside crops for consumption. The recommendation to the government was that the redundant government land should be given to the capable farmers who can plant quality trees that will bring some good return to the farmers in a near future

The study was guided by the following objectives; To examine the effect of drug taking on the discipline of the youth in Lira Municipality, to assess the extent to which drunkardness affect the discipline of the youth in Kaberamaido District, to examine the effects of clubbing on the discipline of the youth in Kaberamaido, to assess the extent to which government policy affect the discipline of the youth in Kaberamaido. Data was collected coded and analyzed using statistical tools. Findings indicated that majority of the respondents agreed that alcoholism in a family leads to familial dysfunctional. It also indicated that most of the respondents agreed that clubbing has become an indispensable element of life for most people in the contemporary world.

- ItemThe assessment of hearing aid to learners with hearing impairment in Nairobi Kenya(Kampala International University; College of Education Open and Distance Learning, 2008-11) Chege, Stephen G.The study aims at assessing the hearing aid to learners with hearing impairment in Nairobi Kenya. The researcher applied survey method that involved qualitative and quantitative approaches of collecting raw data. Thirty questionnaires were sent to thirty respondents who completed and returned all of them to the researcher. The respondents were randomly sampled. Frequency tables, bar graph and pie chart were used to assemble and analyze the raw data in percentages. The data analysis explains hearing aid to learners with hearing impairment, case: provision and barriers to effective use of hearing aids in Nairobi Kenya. The research findings are that the major barriers to effective provision and use of hearing aids are unaffordable, lack of adequate training and maintenance and lack of adequate information of where and how to get fitted with a hearing aid. Therefore, there is need for the government and all the stakeholders to alleviate the issue of hearing to learners with hearing impairment in Nairobi Kenya.

- ItemAn Assessment of the Impact of UPE to the Quality of Primary Education In Tororo District: A Case Study of Mulanda Sub-County(Kampala International University, bachelors degree of primary education, 2017-09) Fastine, AngwellaThis research report was carried out to find the quality of primary education under UPE programme, establish how UPE schools handle increased enrollment, service delivery and how these schools ensure that children successfully complete primary cycle of education in Mulanda Sub-county, Tororo District. The main instruments used were: Interview and Questionnaires, Purposive sampling was used to select respondents, Quantitative and Qualitative, approach used to collect data. Tables were used to analyze data using frequencies and percentages. The findings indicated that the cause of low performance of children was abnormal classes of children difficult to control by a teacher, automatic promotion of pupils as UPE policy, under staffing and poor motivation of teachers among others. The researcher concluded that UPE has not helped to achieve quality education that neither has it helped retain children at school. Based on the conclusion, the following recommendations were made to that effect- The Government should re-visit the programme and thus, re-arrange the whole programme for the improvement of the quality of Education. That the comparative analysis be made with the successful countries and the same ideas be used to improve UPE here in Uganda. Government should improve infrastructure in UPE schools, adequately monitor and evaluate the programme and should not mix UPE with politics.
- ItemAn assessment of the influence of border activities on primary education in Malaba Town Council, Tororo District(Kampala International University; College of Education Open and Distance Learning, 2017-12) Obura, GeorgeThe study on "An assessment of the influence of border activities on primary education in Malaba Town Council, Tororo District" was carried out using the following objectives, leading causes of smuggling by pupils in primary schools in Malaba Town Council, the effects of smuggling on the academic performance of pupils in primary schools and the attitude of the stakeholders towards smuggling in Malaba Town Council. The literature was reviewed in order to establish the gaps that exist in as far as the study was concerned. The literature was reviewed following the objectives of the study. The review of the literature was still based on the research questions to be answered. The research design that was used was exploitative and descriptive research designs hence a large area was explored and the outcome described accordingly. The targeted population of the study was generated through simple random sampling techniques. Data was collected using questionnaires, interview, observation and documentary analysis as research instruments. The collected data was collected manually using Ms-Word and Excel computer packages. The background information or biodata contributed much towards the findings as follows; many of the residents of the area were unemployed, the majority of the respondents were teachers who were technical people whose answers should be authentic. Most children in Malaba Town Council are involved in smuggling. The leading causes of smuggling were several but especially children's background, illiteracy, few schools in the area and poverty. Children were involved in smuggling and this affected their performance through absenteeism, money minded, diversion and environmental. Police, civil society and local leaders helped in controlling smuggling. In conclusion smuggling affects academic performance at a very big rate hence to stop smuggling government should mobilize and sensitize people, among others.
- ItemThe attitudes of teachers in regular primary schools towards the education for the physically handicapped: a case study of Kyangwithya Division of Kitui District Kenya(Kampala International University.College of Education, 2009-12) Zainab, MohamedThe major purpose of the study was to investigate the attitudes of teachers towards the education of the physically handicapped children in Kyangwithya division. A quantitative research approach, using questionnaires was employed to collect the data for the study. Twenty primary school teachers and five schools were sampled for the study. Findings of the study show that the teachers, parents and children have several misconceptions and wrong beliefs about the nature and conditions of physical disabilities and about children with such problems. The implication of the study is that teachers should focus on raising their own awareness about physical disabilities through training in special needs education and other programmes.
