- ItemThe abuse of photojournalism in the media: case study women(Kampala International University.College Of Humanities and social science, 2008-08) Lucy, ApioThe purpose of this study was to investigate the causes of abuse of photojournalism in the media. The specific objectives of the stud_y \Vere to show how photojournalism ethics should be applied when covering women's photography, highlight the facts that some of the portraits of women can conflict peoples morals in society and therefore suggest how to minimize this conflict and to explain how responsible journalism can be exercised so as to eliminate this problem. The methods used for data collection was questionnaires to the staff members of media centers covered. In chapter four, the findings were presented and interpreted in relation to the study objectives and research questions. While linking to the existing literature, results pictures showing the portrayals of women. Based on the findings it was clearly seen that both new vision and the daily monitor portray v.·omen in their photography as sex objects. The findings suggested recommendations that Women photography and photography in the print media in general should be practiced by photojournalists with at least a degree or diploma, so as to perpetuate irresponsible reporting; The print media both new vision and the daily monitor should reconsider public interests other than market or increased sales for their papers so that they are not tempted to publish controversial pictures about women without considering their ethical implications among other recommendations.

- ItemAdvertising and consumer behavior: a case study of Novida Kampala, Uganda(Kampala International University, College of Humanities and social sciences., 2014-06) Achan, JacklineThe aim of the study was to survey the effectiveness of advertisements on buying behavior of the youth. The study was carried out targeting consumers and nonconsumers of Novida fruit flavored drink. Cross sectional survey design was used for the study which allowed generalization of the findings from the selected sample. The target population consisted of the youth congregation at Kampala The sample size was 50. The youth were stratified on basis of their difference in years and then were randomly selected to ensure that both male and female were represented. The research instrument used was a questionnaire. The study sought to find out consumption behavior of the consumers as a result of advertising. The questionnaire objectives were therefore to gather information on attitudes that consumers had towards Novida’s advertising and the impact of this advertising on consumers. Data gathered and results analyzed indicated that advertising did not in fact directly influence behavior towards the process of making the purchase decision; rather it only incites purchase but is not a decisive factor when it comes to Novida’s advertisements. This was attributed to a presence of other factors such as convenience of products, attractive advertising, promotional activities, and generally habits that the consumers had developed throughout their lifetimes. Recommendations were given for further research into these effects of advertising. The researcher also recommended that other marketing communication tools be researched on.

Something that has been talked about over and over and whatever change takes place looks so insignificant. Currently, demographers are in the notion that by 2010 the world’s populations will have doubled from 5.3 billion to more than 10 billion people. With such a speculation, Kenya and Nairobi as the case study here is not left out and the way as to how inhabitants of Nairobi can try and help themselves from being loaded with yet, another heavier burden than what they are already carrying. The topic of paper has been chosen with influence of the fact that despite the availability of the media which has the main role of • Informing Educating • Entertaining Whether it can also be used to sensitize on poverty and whether it is possible to reduce it through the media- the Daily Nation and the Standard newspapers. Ways through which problems can be fought have been analyzed and the researcher hopes that the effort put in the production of this study will produce positive results. It is through the media which plays a significant role in influencing people’s attitudes, ideas and perception of various issues that can be solely relied upon to lead in overcoming poverty.
- ItemAn Assessment of the Impact of Public Relations Departments to the Development of Learning Institutions: A Case Study of Kampala International University.(Kampala International University, Colleges of humanities and social sciences, 2014-06) Georgina, George EdemThe research on the impact of public relations departments to the development of learning institutions was conducted in Kampala International University. A total number of 100 respondents were involved in the study. The research was guided by the objectives of the study which included; finding out the function of public relations departments in learning in institutions, establishing the challenges of facing public relations departments in learning institutions and finding out the solutions to the challenges facing public relations departments in learning institutions. The first research question sought to finding out the function of public relations departments in learning institutions and the study revealed that; keeping organizations’ image, creating good will, informing the public about the organization and achieving organizational objectives were the functions of public relations department in leaning institutions. The second research question sought to establish the challenges of facing public relations departments in learning institutions and the finding revealed that; lack of finance, dominance by management, poor organizational objectives, and poor communication with top management. The third research question sought to find out the solutions to the challenges facing public relations departments in learning institutions, the research revealed that; funding of PR departments, reduce dominance by management, have clear organizational objectives, improvement communication with top management. The researcher later concluded that public relations is very vital for learning institutions and some recommendations were; designing good communicative messages, understanding organizational values among others
- ItemAssessment of the influence of joint ownership on the broadcast stations: a case study of radio west Mbarara(Kampala International University, Colleges of Humanities and Social sciences, 2019-09) Doreen, NabakoozaThe general objective of the study was to determine the effect of joint ownership on the broad cast stations in Uganda, to determine the level of joint ownership in the media industry, to determine the level performance of broadcast stations and to determine the relationship between joint ownership and broad cast stations in Uganda. The findings of the study revealed that there is a high level of joint ownership in the media industry as respondents agreed to all the statements that were used to measure this objective. The findings of the study also revealed that the performance of broadcast stations has increased in terms of the number of listener, the broadcast station airs out countrywide ,that the sponsors of various programs have increased and it has also increased in terms of profitability whereas 86% of the respondents revealed that the number of employees has not increased This implies that regardless of the improvement in performance, broadcast stations still use same people to present different programs More so, the findings of the study revealed that there is a positive relationship between joint ownership and performance of broadcast stations. This means that joint ownership improves that performance of broad cast stations. Though 60% of the respondents revealed that Joint ownership delays decision making of broadcast station and 71 .6% also revealed that Joint ownership hinders smooth airing of the programs because of influence from different parties. The study recommended that the government should advise joint ownership partners on how to run broadcast stations smoothly since they have already out competed that media industry. The management should recruit more employees as 86% of the respondents revealed that the number of employees has not increased regardless of the improvement in the performance of broadcast stations , the partners should form a decision making committee in order to ease the process of decision making and that the joint owners should not interfere with the work of employees as the findings of the study revealed that the interference from different parties affects the performance of broad cast stations

Media has an impact on people and can influence them , positively or negatively, the extent which it can influence depends on how journalist wodcing in the media presents information or news data. In the nm up to the December 2007 general election in Kenya, the media played a key role in promoting images of different political readers and their paiiies, most politician used the media as a platfo1m to spread propaganda about their enemies and promote individual goals ainong people. The general objective of this disse1tation is to exainine the role of media as an instrument used dming political change and election transition. This reseai·ch will use research of descriptive and analytical design. The area of study is Nairobi and sainple size used is 80 respondents. Data is collected via physical visitation, journals, questionnaires and inte1view guide. Data is analyzed through quantitative analysis. , Findings from the reseai·ch indicate that there are factors that influence the role of media during political change, they include; influence of fmmer political leaders, t:dbalism ainong journalist, research centers, the church & mosques, diversity of culture and media competition ainong different media houses. Also, there is propaganda, editmial endorsement, media cainpaign and credibility of media somces. Applications and implications ai·e that, the media should make use of opinion polls, regulate media advertisements, train journalist on political repo1ting, and regulate commercialization of media. Futher still, the government should endorse media development by legalizing media clauses that promote media development.
- ItemAssessment of the role of the media in promoting population issues A Case Study of New Vision News Paper.(Kampala International University, College of Humanities and Social Sciences., 2008-08) Wataye, Benard.BThe major objective was to examine the role of the media in reporting population issues in Kampala district. The study was conducted in, Kampala-Uganda. Community members, political leaders, media officials, population analysts were involved in the study. A total of 70 (seventy) participants, 30 community members, 10 political leaders, 10 media officials, and were involved in the study. The study question was investigated in line with the research questions of the study. The first research question was "What are the causes of a high population growth in Kampala?" The study discovered that; high birth rates, low death rates, improved medical facilities, migration and government policy were the factors given by the respondents. The second research question was "What challenges do the media face in reporting population issues?" The study findings revealed that; lack of finance, poor media programming illiteracy, poor birth registration, and inaccessibility were the answers given here by the respondents. The third research question was "What are the impacts of a high population growth in Kampala?" The answers given by respondents to this researcher question were therefore as follows; poor housing, unemployment, congestion, poor sanitation, solid waste accumulation, wetland degradation, poor sewerage disposal and water pollution were the answers given. Conclusions and recommendations were then made after presenting and interpreting the data.
- ItemChallenges faced by private radio stations in Uganda: a case study of Kasese Guide radio, Grace and Messiah radio, in Kasese District(Kampala International University; College of Humanities and Social Science, 2009-08) Masika, Subuyi N.The study was carried on Kasese Guide Radio, Messiah and Grace Radio found in Kasese District. In Western Uganda boarding the Democratic Republic of Congo. The General objectives of the study was to identify challenges faced by private Radio Stations in Kasese District. A case study of Kasese Guide Radio, Messiah and Grace Radio. To identify the contributions of these private radio stations to the social, political and economic development of Uganda. To find possible solutions to these challenges. Not all the staff of these Radio stations were legible to be interviewed for the study unstructured interview and 6 respondents were able to give the rightful information. The study revealed that 75% of the challenges are caused by restrictions by government, high licenses, registration fees, restrictive laws of defamation, criminalizing of other acts like sedition and libel. 20% is a result of unqualified staff. Owners' influence of the content to be broadcasted. Stiff competition with other radio stations for listenership like voice of Taro, Kinkizi FM, Radio West, Kampala Radio, Capital etc.

The purpose of the study was to find out the challenges faced by the media when combating terrorism. The study used both qualitative and quantitative methods to do the research. Data collection methods were thinks like questionnaires and both formal and informal interviews. The study revealed several causes of terrorism, their effects and some of the problems the media personalities face when trying to combat terrorism. The study recognized that the however free the media is in an open society, they are particularly vulnerable to exploitation and manipulation by the ruthless terrorist organizations. It also found out that the media are in a kind of a symbiotic with terrorism. The study findings concluded that the media plays a very important role in trying to combat terrorism. The Kenyan government has accepted the reality that terrorism has established its roots in Kenya and has responded to combat the threat with the help of the media.

The study area was Nairobi Province which is Kenya's principal, economic, administrative and cultural center and one of the largest and fastest growing cities in the world. This population has been chosen purposely and specifically because of a relatively high levels of literacy, social status employment of the group of Kenya's elite which implies the existence of wages, salaries and consequently the highest broadcast and circulation number of each day's edition. This is because the population has the capability of owning television sets and has access to different challenges. Chapter one will intend to introduce the problem on the "challenges of the independent media in Kenya", to give objectives and the hypothesis of the study. This chapter will also indicate the significance of the study; this means that it indicates the aim· and the target of this study. Chapter two will intend to show the literature review, how other people have written about the problem. The same chapter will also try to make a comparison of the views and opinions from different writers who have been writing and discussing about the problem of the challenges facing the independent media. Chapter three will intend to introduce the research methodology; this means that it will give out t the methods and tolls which were used in the study. Chapter four, attempts to summarize the main findings of the study. It will also analyze them scientifically in order to get good meaning. Possible solutions, conclusions and recommendation will appear on chapter five of this.

- ItemThe challenges facing the newspaper industry in Tanzania: case study media solutions ltd dares salaam, Tanzania(Kampala International University.College of Humanities and Social Science, 2008-09) Robert, ZephaniaThe future of newspapers is in danger of extinction from the face of the planet unless instant and effective measures are undertaken to save it from disappearance. There are a number of challenges facing the newspaper industry globally, particularly in the developing world. One of the major challenges facing the newspaper industry in Tanzania is unskilled human labour. In addition, inadequate finances is another serious challenge hindering the development of the newspaper industry in Tanzania. However, these challenges are not limited to the operation of the media houses. There is poor readership culture among the population who don't have interest in reading newspapers. Also poverty is another confrontation facing the newspaper industry in Tanzania. Many people can not afford a newspaper copy due to high levels of poverty. The main objective of this study was to find out the challenges facing the newspaper industry in Tanzania. Findings also revealed that illiteracy is a contributing factor in low readership of newspapers in Tanzania. The study has also recommended a number of solutions and measures to be adopted to save the newspaper industry from extinction. One of the major recommendations is the training of manpower in the print media industry in Tanzania. The newspaper industry is as important as any other mass medium therefore it should be maintained by all efforts.

The study established and accessed the challenges of media privatization in Uganda. The study used a descriptive research design involving people and staff at kfm radio station. Data collection instruments were basically questionnaires and written material. The study revealed that indeed there are challenges of media privatization in Uganda starting from national politics, poor management, lack of professionalism and financial constraints. Therefore, given the fact that there are challenges of media privatization, this research is extended to show further, how these challenges can be curbed.

- ItemCommunication strategies and organization image building: a case of Airtel telecom Uganda(Kampala International University, College of Humanities and Social Sciences, 2015-06) Serem Chebet, CazzyThis research was on Communication Strategies and Organization Image Building undertaken at Airtel Corporation. The researcher intended to establish whether various levels of communication strategies as well as specific organizational image building attributes had been factored across board. The methodology employed entailed a case study research design which employed both quantitative and qualitative research methods. The research findings show that there is a positive relationship between the communication and significant image building attributes. These factors as evidenced in this research have factually helped to create a more dynamic environment that would factually determine the overall concept of understanding how Airtel would improve specific undertakings within the company. The research depicted a number of conclusions that would be important in a critical examination of the effects of supervision. We therefore recommend the need to master company goals, setting realistic timelines, and appropriate tools be availed to the employees to accomplish company tasks, in order to increase employee performance.
- ItemCommunity FM Stations and Poverty Reduction in Kabale Municipality:(Kampala International University, Colleges of humanities and social sciences, 2014-05) Ndyabawe, PearlThe study was carried out in southern division in Kabale municipality’ in Kabale district on the of community PM stations towards poverty reduction. Rural development and urbanization are as a result of the incomes and savings generated from the lessons from radio programmes. This is increasing because of the more concentration of the community members and the sponsoring institutions. The main objective of the study was to assess the role of community FM stations in poverty reduction. We look at poverty and its causes/indicators, the radio’s effectiveness, challenges and solutions of community PM stations in trying to reduce poverty levels. Exploratory research design was used to investigate the research problem. A sample size of 48 respondents was selected with the guide of stratified random sampling and simple random sampling. 40 respondents were the primary group and 8 respondents were the secondary group where the primary group was used for research findings. Questionnaires and observation were also used. Data was later analyzed by the use of qualitative and quantitative methods. According to the findings application of radio programmes have reduced on poverty levels. However some constraints have interfered in this service delivery like illiteracy and delivery like difficulty in community mobilization, corruption and transport costs. Therefore, there is need to work hard and massive sensitization to be emphasized where constraints need to be solved.
- ItemA community media (radio) and girl-child education in Teso Sub Region, Eastern -Uganda: A case study of Etop 99.4 fm in Soroti district(College of Humanities and Social Sciences, 2015-05) Ekwaru, AbrahamThe purpose of this study was to examine the role of community media in promoting girl-child education and national development and to point out existing challenges and opportunities. The key assumption of the study was that if community media were to be established and sustained in rural areas, the majority of Ugandans would have more influence in decision making in matters concerning their own development thus education. A community radio station Etop radio under the auspices of the Vision Group was used as a case study radio. Both qualitative and quantitative approaches were used in data collection. The quantitative approach focused on Iteso community in Soroti district (Teso sub region).Data collection instruments Included Questionnaires, observation and Interviews with local and national officials whose activities have an impact on the establishment or regulation of the community media. More information was obtained through observation and documentary review. Statistical analysis was performed with the aid of relevant software, the Statistical Package for Social Science (SPSS). Findings suggest that community media are capable of fostering girl-child education, interest and participation of Its target audience regardless of sex, age group, occupation or level of education. Community media set the agenda for its audience and are useful as credible sources of Information and education. They also play the vital role of facilitating social change and act as catalysts for development However, establishment and development of the grassroots media face challenges such as over dependence on donor funding, inadequate supply of professionals, strict legislations and regulations governing their establishment and operations. Despite these challenges, opportunities are abundant; among them being wide acceptance by the communities because of their relevance; Increasing number of International Institutions and agencies (for example UNESCO, USAID, UN Food and Agriculture Organization) that are willing to provide funds for community media development; low cost of operating community radio stations and anticipated availability of space on the FM spectrum following digital radio switchover. Recommendations call for the exploitation of potentials for community media to enhance education, democracy and national development
- ItemA comparative study of rural accessibility to media information a case of Lukaya sub-county Masaka district(Kampala international international: College Humanities and Social Sciences, 2005-07) Samuel, KobwemiThe mode and level of information dissemination are crucial to social development. The rural communities are basic in realizing social change. But these have to be intensively informed so as to adapt to the new ways of life. The media therefore take the challenge to continuously pass on information to the rural masses. This book presents the findings about the extent to which the media have served the rural communities with information, after studying whether the rural people give audience to the media and how they use the media to get information, if at all they do. The findings of the study in short show that the rural people are able to access radio more than any other media. Audience however is still low because people are limited by factors such as poverty, illiteracy, time and inappropriate programming by the media. Having identified the missing gaps in disseminating information to the rural people, the report suggests suitable ways by which the government, the media and other agencies can adopt appropriate policies for information accessibility by the rural people.
- ItemThe concept of culture and its propagation by radio, a case study of Tororo District Uganda Japadola Tribe(Kampala International University, College of Humanities and social sciences., 2018-04) Eridu, JosephThis research was carried out on the role radio in propagating culture in Uganda a case of Jopadhola in Tororo district; it was carried in a period of two months from June to august. The objectives of the study were to: assess the role of radio in promoting culture in Uganda, identify the challenges encountered by radio in filtrating culture, and assess the effects of mass media in towards culture. The study used a cross sectional survey design basing on the use of qualitative and quantitative approaches that were adopted to establish the roles of radio in propagating culture. In this study, data was collected using both primary sources like questionnaires and interviews and secondary data sources. This design was used to profile, define, segment, estimate, predict, and examine associative relationship between the two variables. Cross-sectional studies easily provide a quick snapshot of what is going on with the variables for the research problem. The findings of this study show how the issue of the Radio affects our cultural value and has been a topical issue, it has been a subject of debate in our country due to the fact that the Radio is a powerful vehicle for the dissemination of cultural diversity. Ansah (1977) Majanga, observed that the fear is prevalent that through the use of modern technology and mass communication some culture risk losing their identity and becomes submerged by the culture belonging to those who control modern technology and communication software. This research work which is made up of five chapters, gives a system step as to how the study was carried out. The results of the findings show that culture is not being wide coverage as regards to the radio, hypothesis formulated were subjected to empirical tests to prove this. Data has shown that the radio has been performing positively in propagating culture in Uganda. but their impact is not encouraging at all.
